Sumo, The Japanese Wrestling by H. Tittle

Recommended Posts

I thought some of you might be interested in this. I recently came across an English translation of "Sumo - Der Japanische Ringkampf" (from Journal of Combative Sports). Haven't had the time to go through it yet, but seeing I'm not much of a sumogamer, I probably will soon... (Laughing...)

The following is an edited translation of a German-language sumo text written by a man interned at Camp Bando,in Tokushima prefecture. While I know nothing about Herr Tittle except that he apparently read English, German, and Japanese with considerable facility, the print shop at the Prisoner-of-War Detention Camp Bando published the original text under the title Sumo, der japanische Ringkampf nach japanischen Quellen, around June-July 1919.

I already know this page. It is considerably good, probably the translation is ok, I don't know the original. I have to say though that I had heavy doubts at first after seeing that the name of the author on the cover of the book is H. Tittel, but he is written throughout the page as Tittle. I think that the name of the author is one of the more important and at the same time one of the easiest parts of a translation work (well, not from Japanese sources), so this seems really embarassing.  (Laughing...)

The name has obviously been translated. In German, 'Titel' means 'title', right? So, logically, 'Tittel' becomes 'Tittle'. (Laughing...)

Well, maybe not, but somehow I can't shake the thought that it might be a play on words... (I do not get it...)
