Not that many kensho applications were canceled, so even without Kisenosato and Takayasu from the start, the basho is expected to have a new kensho record: 2213 have applied so far, most ever was last year Natsu with 2153. About 400 kensho are meant for the last bouts from each day. The top 5 kensho attracting rikishi are (in that order): Goeido, Endo, Hakuho, Mitakeumi, with over 100 each. Especially Endo and Ryuden profited from sponsors switching the kensho to them. Of course more kyujo may cause the the total number to drop down again.

Endo coming back didn't save the attempt for a new record - which means that also not many of Goeido's kensho were redistributed: in the end the total number of kensho was 1942 http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2018/05/27/0011298933.shtml

Sponichi has that only in the proper paper (I bought it for day 13 and 14). The next Nikkan banzuke will list the yearly total of all then still in makuuchi - by comparing that to the present total, one gets the total of this basho. I posted that in the past, but haven't updated my routines for that after Nikkan changed the format a few years ago.

The 5th of those rare kensho from a municipality, new for the Natsu basho: from Kikugawa-city in Shizuoka, ordered by the Kikugawa Green Tea Association

It will be placed on the 4th before the last torikumi each day, with the announcement of "The place of origin for deep steamed green tea, Shizuoka prefecture's Kikugawa-city"

http://mainichi.jp/articles/20180421/ddl/k22/050/190000c

Nikkan claims it was the 5th to last. The reason: "We think the TV ratings are best then, and for the last bout it would drown in the many kensho then. Sales will start from now on, but inquiries have gone up considerably. Just as planned." They only place kensho for Natsu, the time the new tea arrives, and want to do it again next year. "We really want to place it on a Shizuoka pref. rikishi", but Sagatsukasa as the last was in makuuchi Haru 2013. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/201805270000332.html

A very special kensho is the Morinaga-sho

the Morinaga kensho is a disappointment.

the “Morinaga Award,” which is a kensho from Morinaga Confectionary.

This is the only prize that is determined by the votes of fans attending that day.

They mark the bout that they are most interested in on a designated form.

And the torikumi with the most votes will get the kensho placed on it.

Of course, the winning rikishi will get the prize money, but

the box of caramel is given as an additional prize.

I tried to find that designated form, but when I found the box to put in the votes, it said: "write the bout and your address on an empty box of Morinaga chocolate or caramel".

I wouldn't call that a vote by fans attending that day, just a vote by Morinaga fans/customers attending that day.

Of course the boxes are on sale in the kokugikan. Among those who voted for the bout with the most votes - that gets the kensho - 3 win a packet of 10 boxes of chocolate.

The Morinaga-sho started Hatsu 1951 and is the oldest kensho now. Usually 100-200 choco-buyer votes are placed, up to 500 on a very good day. Endo had that kensho 5 times this basho, but usually he is not in contention - it's not just on popular rikishi (except in case of Kise), mainly on a decisive bout for the basho. Hakuho had it nearly every day as he was at the peak of his power. This time Hakuho-Tochinoshin got that kensho undisputed. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/201805250000469.html

a token of gratitude from the NSK for the company
