Yubinhaad 11,856 Posted March 30, 2016 Nikkan reports that Takasago-beya sewanin Fusanobori passed away in an Osaka hospital this morning at the age of 60. The cause of death was sepsis. Fusanobori had a 15-year career on the dohyo as a member of Oyama-beya, winning the Sandanme yusho in the 1976 Aki basho. He reached his highest rank of Makushita 2w in the 1979 Kyushu basho, during a seven-year spell in which he was always ranked in Makushita. He retired in 1986 and became a sewanin, a position he held for the next 30 years. One junior stablemate from his active days remembers him as a 'drill sergeant' type in asageiko, but gentle and friendly away from the ring. Fusanobori continued to get involved in asageiko, offering advice to the younger rikishi of Takasago-beya. With Asabenkei before the 2013 Nagoya basho. Fusanobori helped to raise the funds for Asabenkei's first kesho-mawashi following his promotion to Juryo last year. And with young Asatatsuke sometime last year:
Nantonoyama 252 Posted March 30, 2016 Sad news. This guy dedicated his life to sumo, and was never under the spotlight.
krindel 684 Posted April 6, 2016 I have a great respect for people who have given so much of themselves to sumo without the perks of ever being a sekitori or an oyakata. Many of those are really what the cliché calls "unsung heroes", and I am really sad to hear that one of them has passed before his time. May he rest in peace. (Bow...) Yubinhaad 11,856 Posted April 29, 2016 (edited) The wake for the late Fusanobori took place at the Kokugikan earlier today and was attended by around 200 people. Rijicho Hakkaku-oyakata (former Yokozuna Hokutoumi), from the same Takasago ichimon, gave a farewell speech, as did Hideo Yamashita, head of Takasago-beya's Tokyo koenkai. Following the wake, Fusanobori's wife and daughters carried his portrait around the dohyo in the Kokugikan, a final farewell to his 45 years in the sumo world. Hakkaku gives his speech. Former Sekiwake Takamiyama is at the far end of the front row, next to Asasekiryu and Takasago-oyakata (former Ozeki Asashio). Fusanobori's portrait. A nice touch, this akeni-themed kodengaeshi was given to those attending. Edited April 29, 2016 by Yubinhaad
