Musashimaru against daizen...

Recommended Posts

As most probably know by now, Daizen managed to outpace Musashimaru in his first bout against a yokozuna in several years. After a relatively slow tachi-ai where Daizen slightly sidesteps to the right, Musashimaru never gains control over his opponent, who is nimbly running around the big yokozuna. Finally Daizen manages to catch Musashimaru without full balance and manages to push him right out. The kimarite is Yorikiri, so I assume Daizen still has a grip on the belt with his right hand when he pushes Musashimaru out, although it's not apparent on the video. Daizen looked far from 37 years and it should be interesting to see how long he can keep in sumo.

This was Daizen's 2nd kinboshi, where his first kinboshi came against Akebono on day 5 of the Kyushu basho in 1994. 7 years between 2 kinboshi of his, puts him in 4th place overall (since 1890 when the rank of yokozuna was introduced) regarding longest period between kinboshi. In the number one spot is two-times Ozeki Nayoroiwa, who also had a total of 2 kinboshi, 14years and 8 months apart. See table 1:

Born in December of 1964, Daizen is 36 years and 11 months old, which puts him in joint seventh position regarding oldest rikishi getting a kinboshi. In the modern-day post-WW2 list, he is fourth. See tables 2 and 3 below.

You have... some stats...

All I can remember from that Musashimaru vs. Daizen bout is that I spilled coffee on my pants and thought that perhaps I should start waking up by now. Almost noon... :-0

You have... some stats...

I finished a list of all kinboshi recently in an Excel document, and then I played around with different tables that could be made from them. I'm sure there are some mistakes there but ah well. Trivia is what makes life worth living :-D

Anyway, I think it was a great opportunity to check if HTML-tables could be inserted in the forum.

I must say I was quite impressed with Daizen's match. I didn't see it live but I have watched Dale's movie of it several times. Daizen looks like he is a 24-year-old up-and-comer surprising the 40-year-old Yokozuna...

Now. Must sleep... Muzzzz...
