Several kachi-koshi down below...

Recommended Posts

As the basho has passed half time, a lot of rikishi in the lower divisions, Makushita and down, has managed to get their kachi-koshi. Here is a look at some rikishi of interest:

Two of the the most promising stables today are Hakkaku-beya of former Yokozuna Hokutoumi and Matsugane-beya of former Ozeki Wakashimadzu. The former, featuring shin-Komusubi Kaiho, currently has 3 rikishi never in Juryo in top-10 of Makushita, while the latter has 4 up-and-coming rikishi cluttering up Juryo.

Day 8, Ms01e Hokutoriki of Hakkaku-beya was brought up to Juryo and beat J11w Wakatenro of Matsugane-beya to go 4-1 and practically secure his sekitori-debut in January, making him the first non-college deshi of Hokutoumi to make it to the paid ranks.

While the Musashigawa-ozeki are ailing and Musashimaru is constantly said to be too old and too heavy (whether it's true or not), there seems to be some resurgence lower down the ranks, showing that Mienoumi does not rest in recruiting good talent.

In day 8, Ms31w, Yumitori-shiki-rikishi Shinmei of Musashigawa-beya secured his kachi-koshi against former Juryo Ms28w Tomikaze. A few more wins and Shinmei might find himself in uncharted territory in January.

The former college-star Kakizoe of Musashigawa-beya, who was the first to be granted Ms15 start-status in September, was sidelined due to injury. Instead he has started his career this basho, at Ms55e, and has done so in best possible fashion. On day 8 he throws Sd05e Kaishoryu by shitatenage securing his 4th win and first ever kachi-koshi in pro sumo.

Another former college competitor in Musashigawa-beya, Sd38e Miyamoto started his career at Maezumo in March and after 7-0, 4-3, 6-1, has continued his success at his relatively high Sandanme-placing by beating another former college competitor (also 3-0 after 3 matches), Kitamura of Hanaregoma-beya, to secure his kachi-koshi on day 8.

Further down, 2nd generation foreigner Jd53w Minaminoshima from Tonga, also of Musashigawa-beya, has followed up his first make-koshi last basho by securing his kachi-koshi after only four matches.

And finally, another one of Mienoumi's promising deshi, the Georgian Kokkai, who has started his career 6-1, 6-1, has also achieved kachi-koshi after four matches at his rank of Jd03e.

A few other results after day 8:

Ms01w Ushiomaru of Azumazeki-beya is still on par to enter Juryo for the first time ever, being at 3-1 after day 8.

Another one possibly on his way there is Sadogatake-beyas Kotokanyu, who is second only to Terao in number of bashos entered of active rikishi (started 1981.03), although he needs several more wins to bounce right back into Juryo from his Ms05w position. Currently 3-1.

At Ms08e former Juryo Komahikari of Hanaregoma-beya is 4-0, still in the race of 7-0 and direct promotion to Juryo. So is Makushita Tsukedashi starter and former college star Iwakiyama of Nakadachi-beya at Ms10e. As Tsushima, he started his career in Nagoya 2000 by getting injured and going down to sandanme, but has found his stride and is finally seriously looking as a potential sekitori.

Ms41w Kanechika of Kitanoumi-beya, who has spent a total of 24 basho in Juryo (second only to Wakahayato of active rikishi never entering Makunouchi), has apparently found some old form and has also gotten four wins this far. He has not been in Juryo since March 1998 though.

Another former Juryo, BIG rikishi Ms45w Susanoumi (who has nevertheless lost some 30 or 40 kg since his big days) is NOT doing well though, going make-koshi after only four matches.

Well, that's it for now.

Very informative post Yubi!

Day 8, Ms01e Hokutoriki of Hakkaku-beya was brought up to Juryo and beat J11w Wakatenro of Matsugane-beya to go 4-1 and practically secure his sekitori-debut in January, making him the first non-college deshi of Hokutoumi to make it to the paid ranks

Hakkaku-beya must have pleasant training atmosphere as Kaiho is incredibly good at komusubi and in addition to Hokutoriki also Ms4W Hokutoiwa is 3-2 and by winning both of his remaining bouta and with great deal of banzuke luck he could even get promoted to Juryo too.

While the Musashigawa-ozeki are ailing and Musashimaru is constantly said to be too old and too heavy (whether it's true or not), there seems to be some resurgence lower down the ranks, showing that Mienoumi does not rest in recruiting good talent

Musashimaru is strange as he is breaking records in time spent on the dohyo during one honbasho! According to intuition without hard statistical evidence I would say that if we exclude anomalies as Kotonowaka-Takatoriki (8min) and Kotomitsuki-Musoyama (much more), Maru is close to record in long bouts in overall per basho!

In day 8, Ms31w, Yumitori-shiki-rikishi Shinmei of Musashigawa-beya secured his kachi-koshi against former Juryo Ms28w Tomikaze. A few more wins and Shinmei might find himself in uncharted territory in January.

Shinmei continued his chosen path and won by oshidashi yesteday. 5-0 now and firmly in Makushita yusho race! Would be nice to see him in play-off on senshuraku.

And finally, another one of Mienoumi's promising deshi, the Georgian Kokkai, who has started his career 6-1, 6-1, has also achieved kachi-koshi after four matches at his rank of Jd03e.

He was brought up to Juryo to face Hisanosana (Sd92w) who also had 4-0 record. Kokkai dropped him with sukuinage rising to 5-0.

Another former Juryo, BIG rikishi Ms45w Susanoumi (who has nevertheless lost some 30 or 40 kg since his big days) is NOT doing well though, going make-koshi after only four matches.

He has?? Where have you gotten this information? 30-40kg down means he is about 200kg now? He pulled down his opponent to and got a consolation win yesterday. 1-4 now.

Furuichi Sd3e (former one time Juryo department store of techniques Komidori) is 3-2 at the moment. He has suffered from injuries but it would be nice to see him back in sekitori-ranks....always great to see technical versatility! He won yesterday with kainahineri.

I can swear I have seen something about him even being below 200 kg, somewhere during this year. The closest thing I could find right now though, was the weight lists from last Kyushu [in Sumo, 1/2001] where he is listed as 204.5 kg. It's still way below his top mark 233 (or something like that).

I agree. But he has a long way to go, when he's in Sandanme, trying to get back to Juryo...
