Welcome to Sanyaku, Aoiyama !

Komusubi or Sekiwake. As I see Aoiyama assured his Sanyaku promotion with KK at M2e and both M1 (Kyokutenho and Aminishiki) falling down, as well as at least one Komusubi (Toyonoshima) and one Sekiwake (Tochiozan). So, Sekiwake for Aoiyama is possible, right?

As a general rule, 8-7 from M2e is far away from a sure sanyaku slot even with several free spots, as higher kachi-koshi from further down can easily overtake the M2e. Happens to M1w as well who then just shifts to M1e. In this case Aoiyama is quite close with Tochinoshin and possibly Aran (with a win) who also project to be M1e (going by the formula "wins - losses" as the promotion/demotion size), with Kaisei just trailing at M1w and Gagamaru at M2e. These projections can easily be wrong when they are that close so there's still a lot of wiggle room.

In the end I agree that it looks like Aoiyama is the best candidate for the open S1w spot behind Myogiryu. It just isn't that straight as you seem to believe.

Is it possible that Goeido moves from SE to SW only? In such case there will be only Komusubi slots available to the Maegashira.

Possible, but very rare.

Thanks :)

Wow... Didn't expect it was that rare.

Anyway, congrats to Aoiyama for his KK!

Great spirit by our guy Aoiyama and very solid sumo the second week. Hopefully he gets more attention at the heya and is better prepared for the Ozeki next time. I think he will be at least Komusubi as I don't see anybody more worthy after this basho. Both Aran and Tochinoshin were just 9-6 and I can hardly say that is more impressive than 8-7 when having faced all Ozeki!
