Last week received a copy of a DVD covering the official ESU in Ukraine back in June.

This is an NHK show, aired a couple of weeks back and includes some reasonably in-depth coverage of the game in Europe with decent footage from the event and insights into the game today and its future.

If interested in seeing it online let me know and I will see what I can do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeXvkBBt-0Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player Here you go.Sum0t0ri has kindly put it on YouTube. The gyoji should slap that Sasha show pony into line. Its bad etiquette and bad sportsmanship to keep your opponent waiting whilst you ponce around the dohyo and kick the tawara. They won't let him do that if he goes to Japan.Still congratulations to him anyway.

Correct me if I am wrong but did I hear them say that they had 600 competitors at this unofficial tournament? It didn't look like it in the stands. If the bouts took 1 minute each to get in, fight and get out then the first round alone (assuming everyone gets to fight at least once) would be 5 hours the second 2 and a half hours etc.

Good to see Otowayama (ex Takanonami) . He seems to have perfected a good Aussie accent and he gave them some very valuable advice.Lets hope they forget it by the time they get to Hong Kong for the SWC and go back to that strange staggered tachi ai with gorilla fists.

but its not the official European Sumo Union Championships. Is there are second part to it? I didn't think they would be interested in amasumo politics s glad they left it out. Anyway I don't want to get involved with the nasty internal politics of Eurosumo and according to the IFS's own constitution neither should the IFS. From the video its clear that the Ukrainians seem to be getting plenty of ₴ (hryvnia) from the government. I would be interested to know how much they get considering the average GDP per capita is on around $USD7,200 per year. They love their sport but I can't help thinking they should show a little more respect for traditions of sumo and at least insist that the kids take their shoes off in the ring.

I hope I don't have to fight their veteran Ermakov (I think) again. He is as tough as Petr with his broken foot. I felt him break two fingers in our bout and he just taped them up and kept fighting as if nothing had happened.

I think I am starting to understand why the eastern Europeans in particular are all so keen to control the ESU. For example I had a look at the Russian site and there are 13 coaches which includes Head coach of the National Team, Head of National Teams, Senior team something I can’t read- Старший тренерсборной команды. 7 team coaches ,a coach doctor, coach masseur and coach administrator. I'm guessing these are not just volunteer positions?

Старший тренер сборной команды

My Russian is quite outdated, but this is simple: senior trainer of the national team

the IFS make it up as they go along of course but the ESU, under Gunther Romenath showed a lot of potential.

Backroon backstabbing since he retired 3 or 4 years ago and quests to be a genro of sorts by some have really led to the 'old' ESU's ruin. They will soon lose their accountant of 20 years and will open themselves to more strife and potential for 'oddities' under the secretary general they have IMHO.

As is - the eastern Europeans are the way forward for the region. I honestly think the IFS saw so much of itself in the ESU as was with their rotating door presidency and comical attempts to pad participant numbers that they have now chosen to ignore the 'official' ESU.

I have been reading this forum for over a year and I enjoy it very much however, I am fed up of people on this forum continually making comments / posts about how great the Ukrainian event was and how much better the eastern European organisation is. One member of this forum should quit being a writer and become a spin doctor in politics.

Just because you have a personal vendetta against the ESU and the event in Hungary, doesn't mean your opinion is correct. You continually use your very good writing skills and excellent vocabulary to put a spin on these opinions making it look to those not in the know, that they are right.

In previous posts on the European Championship topic people have said that the Ukrainian event was attended by more nations than the Hungarian one. Factually this is incorrect, either you they are ill informed or have just made it up. As stated in the Video of the Ukraine event there were 12 nations at the event not the 16 repeatedly quoted.

I spoke to a polish rakish at the event in Ukraine on Facebook and he confirmed that there were 12 nations represented and that a number of national flags were displayed with no rikishi present from said nation. Was this a deliberate ploy by the Ukrainians to con people that their event was bigger?

I was told by the Polish wrestler and a Hungarian again at the event that the 12 nations were Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, Armenia, Lithuania, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Moldova and Georgia. Again according to both these wrestler this has been deliberately falsified to give the impression that lot’s of nations backed the competition. The Hungarian Rikishi stated that at the after party he spoke to the sole representatives from Georgia, Turkey and Moldova and found out that they were in fact Ukrainians with parents born in the countries they represented ( this representation was forced on them by the Ukrainian organising committee.)

This is clearly a deliberate attempt by the committee / organisers to over inflate the influence and validity of their competition.
