Aki 2002 Re-Live on Eurosport

Recommended Posts

Sorry, for the non-Europeans who cannot catch Eurosport, but for the European viewers, this is a great moment to re-live last basho !

Plus the great touch of the commentators like Syd Hoare.

Yesterday night, they broadcasted a re-live of every bout in Makuuchi from day 1 to day 6.

Personally, I learned a lot of things with that broadcast.

Some things I noticed :

For his first win in Makuuchi after 3 years, Vs Tokitsuumi, Gojoro quit the dohyo and came back to the ring, because he had forgotten the habit of receiving the envelope with the money prize after a win !

Asashoryu wins with still more and more techniques than before ...

Syd Hoare learned me that Mongolian Kyokutenho is absolutely fluent in Japanese and that Akinoshima said before the basho if he getted demoted to Juryo, he'd quit ... So, so, so ... and the Sumo Association said whether Chiyotaikai won the tournament or not, he just needed 13 wins to become Yokozuna ...

Maru heavier than never : 237 kilos ... So, Maru the heaviest ever Yokozuna ?

Syd talked about him because he was accused of sleeping, and he gave the impression to be elsewhere, you know when the rikishi sat around the dohyo, waiting for their own bout. So, does Maru really sleep sometimes ?

I noticed new comer Kasuganishiki stretchs himself a lot before each fight !

I carry on playing and re-playing the bout Kotoryu Vs Takanohana to understand what happened ...

The Yokozuna was sleeping in the center of the dohyo or what ? He exchanged pretty weak tsuppari with Kotoryu - who had lost 4 on 4, before - (Both could have attend a class by Toki) and he poorly slided after ... I can't believe it ... This bout was a Jonokuchi-level bout !

Other remarks ?

Well, I noticed this last basho already, but now that you remind me...

Hokutoriki always adjusts his mawashi before coming on the dohyo... and always the -khm- *back* part of mawashi. :D

Mebbe his oyakata should buy him a better-fitting one...

After his win Vs Takanonami, Takamisakari almost excused himself to Nami after daring beating him because he had just excused after a bad start.

To be noticed that Takanonami has one of the slowest start in Makuuchi. He uses the maximum of the 4 minutes and it's strategic, because a lot of opponents are too hurry to fight and Nami uses all the time he can to put them out of countenance !

Did you notice Kotomitsuki throws a hand of salt, after he hits twice his belt and always sucks his right forefinger after this ! Is Mickey superstitious ?

Toki almost beated Musashimaru thanks to the power of his violent tsuppari and made a good fight against Takanohana. In the future, he will obtain the kinboshi !

Syd Hoare leaned us the father of Tamanoshima was a former Japanese Middle-Weight Boxing champion ...

Gojoro almost always tries a lot of tsuppari and pushing moves, but his very tall height ever unbalances him too often and he loses a lot because of this. He should really work more overarm grips or locks (like Takanonami does) at training and he'll be much better, though he remains a very entertaining wrestler (to me) like he is currently.

Powerful Wakanosato trains a lot pushing a lot of weight, but Musashimaru was a too heavy weight to him !

Fantastic bout between Takanohana and Asashoryu, and my opinion is this basho, for his come-back, Takanohana was in a more defensive position than in the past where he took more initiatives but he defended so perfectly and stroke back so perfectly too, the bout against Asashoryu is the perfect example of this !

Well, looking forward to watching the final 3 days of coverage on Eurosport tomorrow night !

Is it true? Toki almost beat the Moose? I won't believe it until I see it with my own eyes... I don't have eurosport...  (Unhappy...)

And incase you don't have real player, here is a brief rundown of that match:

It started out innocently enough. Maru had Toki backing up towards the bales when Toki somehow managed to slip his right hand up under Maru's chin. He proceeded to push the Moose all the way back across the dohyo with that one hand to Maru's neck. Unfortunately for Elvis, once he got the Yokozuna to the edge, he seemed to run out of gas. Maru finally broke free and leaned on Toki, pushing him back and out a few seconds later in an almost business-like fashion.

Surprisingly good effort from Toki.

Some other interesting things to have been said by Syd Hoare : (this is already the third time I'm re-watching the bouts I've just registered)

In the audience, at day 11, there was Konishiki, former Toki's stable mate and very disappointingly, Toki lost to Buyuzan !

When Takanohana manages to get his hands on the belt, it's almost over for the opponents !

Hokutoriki's Oyakata told him to ease off technically, and just push the wrestlers out ! (which confirms the huge possibilities and the great future of that wrestler)

Takatoriki almost in tears for his very last basho during the initial ring introduction of the wrestlers ...

Toki loves slapping his belt ! (you will notice the noise he produces when he slaps his belt three times generally ... to impress the opponent ? perhaps ...)

Other interesting comments of Syd Hoare for the final 3 days coverage of the Aki Basho, like :

Takanowaka is one of the rikishi most appreciated by the young women and teens in Japan.

Shimotori fights on his own name but his Oyakata at Tokitsukaze-Beya retired recently, and the new oyakata could decide of a new shikona for him ..?

My own observations :

Toki very angry after his defeat against Tochinonada. It seems he was taken to his own game during a long exchange of tsuppari with Nada !

It seems Ushiomaru has the same habit as Kotomitsuki, he licks his forefinger after the salt throw ... Superstition ?

Did you notice the tiny pink towel of Takanohana for his face, before each fight ? Asashoryu had the same in dark blue color ... Certainly because of the heat, indoor... or superstition, here again ?
