Kintamayama 47,180 Posted April 12, 2004 (edited) The two Yokozuna candidates are getting ready for another tsuna-tori run. Although the hurdle, a 14-1 yusho, seems high, they are both going about their preparations for the coming Basho without giving it much thought. "I'm not really thinking about it, but I know I'll have to go out as if it's the end", said Chiyotaikai. At the Yokosuka Tournament yesterday, KaioU beat Asashouryuu by yorikiri. "I'm not thinking about anything. If I just go about it naturally, I think something should come out of it..", said KaioU. Both are looking at their 4th tsunatori with a certain calm. This being said, Musashigawa Oyakata, head of Jungyo affairs, hurled a "thunderbolt" at them at the end of the Haru Jungyo yesterday. Neither of them did any public keiko at all. "They should bear in mind their position and do some keiko!", he said. On the last day, the three Ozeki were nowhere to be seen during keiko. Many fans who came especially to see thier idols were very disappointed, so much so that even Musashigawa Oyakata saw it, hence the stern admonition. "They should be more self-conscious of their duties", he added. While Asashouryuu was involved in daily keiko with the young rikishi (as has been duly reported here exclusively...) KaioU and Chiyotaikai elected to not participate in any keiko bout even once during the whole Jungyo, which commenced on the 8th in Kofu. This completely opposite behavior was very conspicuous. It was a short, three day jungyo, which makes it even "worse" in the eyes of Musashigawa, who watched while the two Yokozuna candidates were doing some warm-ups at the dohyo side. "If they feel they can bring down the Yokozuna, they should do more keiko!", he said. It seems instead of a three day jungyo, the three Ozeki took a three day holiday. "Now, the distance between the Yokozuna and the Ozekis has grown even greater..", he lamented. Musashigawa Oyakata was definitely pissed. Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted April 12, 2004 Did Ms. Uchidate have any comments on the ozeki behavior? Thanks Kintamayama for duly (but not dull!) reporting of these events outside the main basho. It's nice to get continuous sumo news.
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted April 12, 2004 At the Yokosuka Tournament yesterday, KaioU beat Asashouryuu by yorikiri. KaioU should definitely have done more during jungyo. Beating Shoryu is not enough to fullfill his duties. To his defense, he needs to be careful with his keiko and train well but wisely taking good care of his health. Maybe he wasn't feeling too good with his body and decided to take it easier. Still it is very unrewarding to his fans who wish to see him do keiko during jungyo. Japanese kaikitsunes must have felt utter disappointment when their champ did just warming up (or were even absent) while Shoryu showed his diligence on the dohyo. And what is Taikai's excuse?? Shame on both ozeki really :-) Shoryu is exceptional example to all younger rikishi with keiko diligence and taking the bouts during jungyo seriously too. Always hating to lose and doing good innovative moves. There are some keiko maniacs like Futeno, Kasugao, Kotomitsuki but still Shoryu's presence sets up such an amazing example that it is truly a wonderful asset to the whole ozumo. Azuma does very powerful keiko too when he is genki but Chiyotaikai seems to lack some effort nowadays. He doesn't have any major problems (as opposed to KaioU's back, Azuma's shoulders, Musoyama's back and shoulders etc.) so he should really be following Shoryu's example. More keiko with KaioU. More of those pre-basho camps where he and KaioU had over 100 training bouts together. Then again he went 13-2 in Haru so why complain now... All Chiyotenzans and other lazy rikishi give a bad example. They should be hidden during jungyo and put Futenos on the dohyo instead. >:-( Shoryu gets my complete admiration for his work ethics and example on the dohyo.
