Guest Nanban Posted January 26, 2004 I was impressed by Futeno's Hatsu-basho performance. Since he and Kokkai were promoted to juryo, Kokkai has improved a little faster and garnered much more attention, but Futenoseems to be gaining confidence to match his technical and strategic ability. Those who are looking for a strong younger Japanese rikishi to combat potential Asashoryu/Kokkai/Roho-for-that-matter domination may wish to review Futeno's solid ten wins. Guest Nanban Posted January 26, 2004 Mind you, both Futeno and Roho were defeated by young Mongolian Hakuho, but he blotted his copybook appallingly by losing to Kasugao on senshuraku. There is some very impressive young talent coming along and I suspect that we will see very considerable turnover in the makuuchi ranks over the next twelve months. Just as well. Zenjimoto 40 Posted January 27, 2004 I am just happy that Futeno didn't continue with his bizarre "lose all the first week, win all the second week" run from the last two basho! ;-) Looking forward to his Makuuchi debut in March... Cheers Zenjimoto
Asashosakari 20,213 Posted January 27, 2004 I am just happy that Futeno didn't continue with his bizarre "lose all the first week, win all the second week" run from the last two basho! :-) Although it looks like Bushuyama is doing that routine now, albeit the other way around (win first week, lose most of the second). ;-) Futeno should be a nice addition to Makuuchi, although I have a feeling he'll need a few basho to get used to the increased competition, much like he did after his promotion to Juryo... Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted January 27, 2004 Yeah, he needs to be more consistent. Even a win one-lose one-win one etc. 7-8 or 8-7 record is better than going 0-7 then 8-7 IMHO. Perhaps he has mental or focus difficulties. Regardless, I am sure that he will work on it and improve, and that he's going to stay a sekitori for a long time.
