Rikishi in amateur sumo world championsh. contests

Recommended Posts

On German sumoforum there is an interesting thread about current rikishi who participated in world championship contests in amateur sumo so why not put similar stuff here too.

Dejima won the open class in the first ever amateur sumo worldchampionship contest in 1992. He was also member of Japan's victorious team in the team competition.

Kaiho won middle-weight category in both 1994 and 1995. He won team competition too in 1995.

Tochinonada was a victim of Yarborough's girth in 1995 final of open class and lost in nowadays well-known tawara-Nada style. He was member of the victorious Japanese team with Kaiho and Kotomitsuki.

In 1996 Hamanishiki won middle-weight category and continued his reign for 2 more world championships winning both 1997 and 1998. He was also a member of Japan's team in 1997 taking gold in that too. Hamanishiki lost to Juha Ahokas, still in top5 Greek-Roman wrestlers of the world, with hikiotoshi. Ahokas came out with ketaguri at the tachi-ai, Hama survived but got caught in a wrestler's neck hold and from there Ahokas yanked him downwards. Hama tried to hang in there but couldn't resist the power at the end losing the final match in the team event final. It was already 2-0 to Japan before that though so it was only cosmetic stain and Japan took the win then too. Kotomitsuki beat another Greek-Roman wrestler Janne Virtanen after a funny looking "tachi-ai" where Koto obviously thought "What will this tall Finnish wrestler do..I wonder if he has some tachi-ai..lets just stand up and see what happens". Hayateumi bulldozed the third Finnish team member whose name escapes me now but he was originally from Egypt I think and very heavy.

Kotomitsuki was team champion from 1994 to 1998 and also won open class in 1998 after winning heavy weight class in 1994 and 1997.

Shimotori and Kakizoe were team members in 1999 contest. Shimotori beat his Polish foe with yoritaoshi. Kakizoe lost the final in open class to Georgian foe who slapped him down. It was not Kokkai though. Kakizoe corrected the lapse in 2000 by beating gigantic (I think) Thorsten Scheibler in final with oshidashi.

Tamarikido was member of Japan's team in 1996 and has gold from that.

Futeno won team gold in 2002. In the same team was Onishi who is the strong newcomer in Haru who needs to start at the very bottom.

Is that the same Janne Virtanen who has had some success in "Strongest Man" competitions of late? B-)
