Amanogawa 79 Posted November 29, 2003 Just the other day I bought a book titled "Can you say this in English" ( which of course written in Japanese (Applauding...) ). A lot of not-too-ordinary questions like "Can you explain in English how to calculate the volume of a cube?" "Can you explain 'wabi/sabi' in English?" -and among them are sumo terms. I guess, most of the time you try to translate Japanese sumo terms into English. Now would you like to try the opposite way? Can you figure out the Japanese for those English sumo terms? :)) Some are quite easy but some may take a little time ... 1. grand champion 2. champion 3. junior champion 4. junior champion second grade ( sounds odd.... (Applauding...) ) 5. jump-off / initial charge 6. grapple 7. foul 8. cash award 9. untitled sumo wrestler in the top division kimarite! 10. dodging and forcing down 11. pushing out from behind 12. pushing out with alternating hand thrusts 13. thrusting out by locking the opponent's arm 14. pushing the opponent's shoulder to force thm down 15. leaning back and throwing the opponent out at the edge of the ring 16. toppling the opponent inside the ring 17. grappling the opponent's torse and twisting him down 18. inner-hand twist down using the opponent's belt 19. arm-twist throw I'll put the answers on Monday. Must be very easy for most of you! (Clapping wildly...)
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted November 29, 2003 I'll try without researching at all. I use the colour #F5F9FD to make my entry invisible unless you paint over it. The next poster might want to use #EEF2F7. Then again #F5F9FD etc. 1. yokozuna 2. ozeki 3. sekiwake 4. komusubi 5. tachiai 6. yotsu 7. hansoku 8. kensho-kin 9. maegashira or hiramaku 10. hatakikomi 11. okuridashi 12. oshidashi 13. hikkake? 14. katasukashi? 15. utchari 16. abisetaoshi 17. makiotoshi? 18. shitatehineri 19. kotenage
Kaikitsune Makoto 210 Posted November 30, 2003 Hmm...first from yokozuna all the way to komusubi. Then 5. tachi-ai 6. hmmmm sumo o suru :-( 7. hansoku 8. kensho 9. untitled? banzuke-gai? 10. forcing down sounds ambivalent and ambidextrous heh! Maybe hatakikomi but my guess is tsukiotoshi which could be more or the forcing down with a dodge in a way..well hatakikomi! (Sigh...) 11. okuridashi aka bum's rush 12. tsukidashi soon to be seen in K1? 13. must be waridashi..Musoyama did this once against Kaiho I think 14. pushing shoulder to force down?...ah katasukashi it must be! Takanowaka liked this against Tosanoumi back in the days Takanowaka was a strong rikishi in sanyaku. 15. utchari 16. abisetaoshi! Often collapsing kind..koshikudake tangential quite often.. 17. Musoyama special! makiotoshi! 18. shitatehineri. Hamanishiki special 19. Hmm...U special? kotenage desu ka? Doomo arigatou gozaimasu :-D
Amanogawa 79 Posted December 1, 2003 Thanks Kotoseiya and Kaikitsune, for taking time to answer those too-simple questions (Laughing...) . Please note that this is simply a copy from the book, and there may be some "glitches" in between the real sumo touch within you members here and the author of the book. And it even could be misleading... Anyway :-) "Answers" are - 1. yokozuna 2. ozeki 3. sekiwake 4. komusubi 5. tachiai 6. yotsu ( ni kumu ) 7. kinjite ( hansoku is right too @Kai-zeki :-) ) 8. kensho (-kin ) 9. maegashira ( I know... what an odd translation this is) 10. tsukiotoshi 11. okuridashi 12. tsukidashi 13. kimedashi ( I know... "thrusting out" doesn't feel fit for "kimedashi".. maybe I should write a little note to the author of this book :-/ ) 14. katasukashi 15. ucchari 16. abisetaoshi 17. makiotoshi 18. shitate-hineri 19. tottari desu yo. ( According to this (now notorious) book (Sigh...) , kotenage is translated as "forearm throw"..... ) I use the colour #F5F9FD to make my entry invisible unless you paint over it. The next poster might want to use #EEF2F7. Then again #F5F9FD etc. And I was not able to manage the "paint over it" skill.... :-P Could you reveal your post please now, Kotoseiya-zeki? Again, many thanks for posting your answers here (Yawning...) , you two great suomi no o-sumo san! :-S
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted December 2, 2003 And I was not able to manage the "paint over it" skill.... (Yawning...) Could you reveal your post please now, Kotoseiya-zeki? Move your mouse arrow under the last visible line in my message. Keep left button pressed down and move the arrow downwards until all nineteen answers are revealed. :-S This is often called painting. Another way to do this is to select all text on a page by either selecting Select All from the Edit menu (may vary between applications although it probably shouldn't) or pressing the A key while keeping the Ctrl key pressed down. Amanogawa 79 Posted December 2, 2003 Move your mouse arrow under the last visible line in my message. Keep left button pressed down and move the arrow downwards until all nineteen answers are revealed. ;-) This is often called painting. Wow! This is fun! (Applauding...) And you've got almost all anwers correct, Kotoseiya-zeki! (Laughing...) Arigato gozaimashita for teaching me this magic trick and again, for your posting the answers.
