"Intra-Ozeki league" results (Hatsu 2006 - Haru 2009)

Recommended Posts

Inspired by several topics going into various aspects of the Ozeki performance recently, I decided to canalize some of my "Between basho blues" mood into a small research of how the recent Ozeki has performed against each other in an improvised "Intra-Ozeki competition".

I have looked into the ozeki-ozeki fights since Hatsu 2006, and have adopted the following scheme:

I am counting the wins and the losses. For any match that didn't happen due to kyujo of one of the ozeki, the other one gets a "normalized" win. For any match that didn't happen due to torikumi decision (like Kotooshu - Chiyotaikai didn't happen in Aki 07) or due to kyujo of both ozeki, each one gets a 0.5 "normalized" win. I count the non-existing Kotooshu-Kotomitsuki bouts as zeroes for both, and not for 0.5.

The winner for the basho is the ozeki with best "Normalized" win-loss record. Tie-breaker is the results of the direct bout.

Besides that, for a long-term analysis I count "points" based on the position at the end of each basho - 5 points for winner, 4 for second place, etc.

So - here are the tables:

Kotomitsuki

11 11 0 10 0 4 34 3.4 4

As expected, Hakuho is the best performing ozeki. Harumafuji's results are also good, but two bashos are not enough to make conclusions.

Interesting impression makes the fact that Kaio and Chiyotaikai have almost identical stats for that period.

Kotooshu stands a little better than them, while Kotomitsuki is steady in his balanced position, having neutral winloss, but have managed to (co-)win only one basho from 10 participations.

i love all the work that went into this. but i think once there became two Koto-ozekis that determining who is "best" based on ozeki v ozeki fights is inately flawed given koto-ozeki's have one less ozeki fight they need to win, while non-koto-ozkie's have one more they have to win

i see that you specifically chose a way to deal with that, but i still think the fact they dont fight eachother puts a larger hinderence on the others when earning points then is a draw back against the koto's for not fighting eachother for their zero.

like the last basho for instance show that the koto's can never have more then 3 losses, while its possible for kaio chiyo and "ama" to all potentially have 4 losses (not all in the same basho though). it just seems like a huge advantage to have one less ozeki fight each basho. Oshu went 3-0, "ama" went 3-1, but oshu doesnt have to fight micky to earn that 4th win, which "ama" did. so for "ama" to beat oshu, he had to go 4-0, while oshu only had to go 3-0 to "win". it just doesnt seem right. its flawed by nature in my oppinion.

Alex's entire post is a joke, in case you're taking it the least bit seriously. It's not really serious or fair, but it's funny.

Alex's entire post is a joke, in case you're taking it the least bit seriously. It's not really serious or fair, but it's funny.

Wait, wait a moment, this is not true. The "fun" word in the sub-title of the thread should be read as "joy" and "entertainment" - not like a "joke".

What I meant is that the whole "research" should not be taken as a "final word" or "proof" for anything (like OBSC, for example) - just I thought it might be an interesting stat.

On the Koto-question: I completely agree it is not fair - it unfair exactly as it is the fact that they don't meet during hon basho and meet some lower maegashira instead.

But there are two ways to deal with it into this analysis - either give them 0.5 points each each basho, or I give them 0. I decided to do the second, because 0.5 point each basho will not affect the win-loss number, but will "deflate" a little their "real normalized" wins number, which I thought I would prefer to avoid. Also, since the ranking each basho is based on a win-loss, not on a wins basis, this 0.5 for both each basho shouldn't be decisive for any "Inter-ozeki yusho".

So yeah, it is what it is - a real life situation. And we can speculate what would have happened if they were from different heyas. Also, we could have speculated about other things -what if Kaio's health was better/worse, what if they have promoted Miyabiyama to the ozeki rank, etc. Each of these aspects has a point, and might be interesting to dig into it. Feel free. (On the banzuke...)

Interesting to note: There's a streak of 5 basho (Kyushu 2007 - Nagoya 2008), where the kadoban Ozeki wins the Inter-Ozeki basho.
