How to become a sumotori?

Recommended Posts

from my boxing experience i would imagine teppo would be great for enpowering your tsupari.

This training technique resembles the "hard sack" boxers use for hardening their crosses and maybe the jabs too (jabs improve better with waist training) ......

i would try to make these excersises mention above just to take a taste of th estrain on those athletes bodies.

(i will find it hard though to do keiko here in Greece. All of our rikishis are out of town...... (Riding an ATV...) )

This ain't gonna sound pretty, but the other thing it also does is create callouses and bone spurs in your hands and wrists so that an open palm still feels like a fist. The first many months of teppo usually lead to great pain and bloody hands until they eventually start healing up, but it does help create calcium deposits in the hands that are as hard as bone and are generally fairly painful....boxers have no need for this aspect of it since their knuckles are already hard, and thus one uses gloves for that.

I suppose that if one were to begin doing teppo on their own, you should probably buy protective gloves for that as well, just so you're able to build up more slowly and make it a less painful process than the Oyakata typically make it.

i have experienced callouses under my feet from my capoeira training when i first started but after two months or so i developed a thick layer of skin on both of my feet.i have no problem whatsoever now.

I suspect that the same goes for sumo rikishis........

i would add that this procedure is nessesary to harden your body both physicaly and mentally.

in boxing we have the protection of the gloves but the wrists suffer great strain and need to harden very much during training to avoid injuries........

.......and when i said that i will try to train like that i didn't mean just teppo but the course it was mention early on this thread.I want to see if a guy with athletic shape can keep up with it...... (Riding an ATV...)

Taka_keiko2.jpg

Teppo is what Takanohana is performing in picture 9. He hits and pushes the pole with open hands from a slightly crouching position.

i hope my description is right, or else please correct me.....

thanks to Manekineko for posting this picture in another thread and i hope she didn't mind me using it.......... (Riding an ATV...)

It is no longer shown because it has the word Sumo in the title and there is no Sumo on UK TV these days.
