Thailand Jungyo

Recommended Posts

A Thailand Jungyo is being considered for 2010, said Ooshima Oyakata. If this happens, it will be the first time sumo comes to South East Asia. The next jungyo is the Mongolian one in August, then comes London in October 2009. " There is talk with people in Thailand. It looks like we'll be having more and more foreign jungyos from now on.. If our conditions are met, we will be moving forward with this. It should probably happen after the London Jungyo", said the Oyakata. "With all of these foreign jungyos coming up, I'd really like to see a Japanese Yokozuna..", summed Ooshima.

The Thailand jungyo has kicked off today. The first ever Bangkok sumo spectacle commenced today amidst an enthusiastic crowd. The actual reason for the jungyo was the Thai King's 84th birthday last December but it was postponed due to the floods back then. The show consisted of explanations of the kimarite, doing shiko and matawari, children's sumo and actual bouts as well. "I got to do sumo with real rikishi..That was really exciting," said an eight year old local kid.

Well, all four Kasugano-beya sekitori are in the picture Kintamayama posted: Tochiozan, Tochinowaka, Kimurayama and Tochinoshin. Takenawa-oyakata (Tochinonada) is also there and apparently performed a yumitori-shiki.

It's a great first, and seems to have been handled very well. I'm sure many of us wish good health to HM the King of Thailand (I happen to have been born in the same year as Queen Sirikit).

Today in Japan, HM the Emperor had heart bypass surgery and I hope and pray that both monarchs have many healthy years before them.

Here are some nice images from the jungyo - the first four are courtesy of Matt Crook, a journalist/writer in Bangkok, and there are a few more on his blog. Looks like a good time was had by all. (Nodding yes...)

In addition to the sekitori mentioned earlier, I believe the rest of the line-up was:

Tochifudo (ex-Juryo), Tochikasuga, Tochitaiga, Tochitensho.
