Prediction: A Japanese wins the Juryo yusho!

I'm just working on my pre-basho Sumō games, and discovered that the Jūryō yūshō is certain to be won by a Japanese rikishi as there are no foreigners at all in Jūryō this basho!

This somewhat surprising fact leads to a question: When was the last time that the Jūryō division had no foreigners?

It's not as far back as you seem to think. Actually, before Kasugao and Asashoryu were promoted to sekitori, there were no foreigners in there either. Natsu 2002 in other words.

But before that there were a few years with Juryo foreigners, with Kuniazuma, Sentoryu (both of whom got injured in March of 2002 to drop out of Juryo) and Hoshitango. No foreingers in Juryo the basho before Hoshitango's promotion, 1998.07, which also was the basho after which Yamato dropped out of Juryo. It seems these basho only come in one, so for the sake of Asasekiryu and Kasugao, they better hope Kokkai get a promotion till next basho  :-)
