Tochinonada,

Why did higher ranked Wakanosato win a tournament prize but not Tohinonada despite the same W-L record 11-4,for that matter why none for Deijima either? It doesnt make sense.

Did anyone  notice Tochinonada compiledthe longest unbeaten run of 11 straight wins after losing the first four matches, could the early losses have cost him a prize?

Yes, I'm quite certain he would have gotten a prize if he had won those four matches too  :-D

But seriously, it's not always easy to understand the reasoning behind a prize, but in this case, Dejima's consecutive losses at the end was devastating for him, while Tochinonada suffered from being ranked so low on the banzuke. 11 wins isn't a garantuee for a prize, and someone that low will have to somehow be visible during the basho to get one. The four losses in the beginning now meant that Tochinonada rather snuck up from behind, and that is not normally premiered.

Someone at Wakanosato's level with 11 wins gets a prize more often though, since the opposition is harder. I think it's more common during the latter stages of an Ozeki run that not even such a performance gets a prize though.

Note that 10 wins for a shin-nyumaku (first time in the Makunouchi division) always gives him a kanto-sho (fighting spirit prize).

Yes it is hard to uderstand the reasoning behind it,If I was Tochinonada I'd be pretty peeved about it but hopefully he will move a good way up the ranks instead as a reward.

Wakanosato probably got the prize because he was the last to stay in the race behind Asashoryu. I found it really strange how he didn't get a prize in Nagoya 2002 - he finished 11-4 and beat both Asa and Maru there. Maybe now they decided to make it up to him.

In theory they should also judge by the quality of the fights, not only by the number of wins. Who knows what exactly were they thinking?
