Hoshifransu 0 Posted January 20, 2003 Chirac will be sad, tomorrow, as a great Takanohana fan he was (and mainly, big fan of Terao) of whom he received the tsuna ... :-
QttP 0 Posted January 20, 2003 This is it, then... Like I said, I'm sad... He paid a heavy price for wanting to beat Maru so badly in Natsu 2001. Still, his career was without a doubt one of the greatest ever. Being a relatively new Sumo fan (just a year or two), I'm happy to have caught at least part of his fabulous career. Who knows how it may have turned out if not that cursed shoulder injury against Miyabiyama. Taka desperately wanted to finish his career with another yusho, like Ake did. I guess it wasn't meant to be. Had Taka known it'd come to that, he'd probably leave immediately after Aki 2002 Senshuraku. Or maybe even right after Natsu 2001. But who can predict such things? However, it's not all bad retiring the way he did. Taka fought until the very last moment, with all the strength he had left, and for that he deserves everybody's respect. Cheers for Takanohana! Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted January 20, 2003 Hi, Cheers to Taka indeed. :~-( May he enjoy a great and satisfying life post his rikishi career! When I started following sumo, Chiyonofuji was by far my favorite. Taka (and Waka) was never my favorite but made the retirement of Chiyonofuji much easier to bear. Fujisan 533 Posted January 24, 2003 I remember very well my first thoughts about Takanohana,"God what a conceited wrestler."It wasnt till I first got on the net one and a half years ago and saw his record of 22 basho that I realised he deserved his lofty position and the respect which goes with it,I regreted
Zentoryu 154 Posted January 24, 2003 hismatch where he sidestepped Chiyotaiki is my favourite all time Sumo moment. Really? A lot of people were upset with him for pulling a henka and not facing Chiyo head on. "Not very Yokozuna-like". I'm not one of those people, BTW.
Fujisan 533 Posted January 25, 2003 That was one of the reasons I loved it,it was so unexpected by the crowd and especially by Chiyotaikai, the look on his face was priceless.
Chiyozakura 163 Posted January 25, 2003 Honestly I think that henka against Chiyotaikai was one of the career lows of Takanohana. I remember him as the man who dominated his opposition in the mid 90's, driving them out in a sumo fight, and not as the guy who sidestepped his opponents to keep his career alive trying not to get hurt. Taka was a great Yokozuna in the 90's, by far the best wrestler I was ever able to see. But after that injury the only thing outstanding about him was his will to carry on.
