Yokozuna Asashoryu Scandal - The Final Chapter
HenryK replied to madorosumaru's topic in Ozumo Discussions
False logic. Like saying "only one murder, only one rape, only one attempt to hijack a plane. We can't judge him because he only did each thing one time and hasn't repeated any action". Sorry but I consider this faulty logic. There are things that are wrong, but if the offender learns his lesson one can and should put them behind -- while with other things the offense is so significant that this is not possible (rape & murder, for example). This is why there is probation in criminal law, or yellow and red cards in football. And I agree with Kozaru that pulling an opponent's hair on the dohyo belongs into the first category, while severely injuring a civilan belongs into the second. Frankly I think this is just basic moral compass. -
Isn't exactly this absurd?

But if his sequence is 11-10-12 this is different??

Yokozuna Asashoryu Scandal - The Final Chapter
HenryK replied to madorosumaru's topic in Ozumo Discussions
If this turns out to be true, I for my part would consider this far worse than playing soccer in Mongalia (or clinching a fist on the dohyo). The Kyokai should start its own investigation yesterday, independent of whether the victim files a complaint with the police or not. -
Seems to me (=utter layman) that at the speed at which the rikishi come out of tachiai, one can avoid a butt only when one has some prior idea where the opponent's head is moving I think the heads are colliding far more often than we are aware of it. It all happens so fast an d unless the replay is focused in the upper body at just the right angle we might miss it. This is of course possible, but why then don't we see more blood (from cuts) or swollen foreheads on the dohyo?

While I can see all the arguments why Baruto did not get the nod, I still feel uneasy about it. Baruto met what is commonly assumed to be the yardstick, and most agree he is on par with the existing Ozeki. They shouldn't make Ozeki promotions overly hard. One day, when Kaio and Kotomitsuki will be retired, the Kyokai may yearn for somebody getting a run together as Baruto did in the past 3 bahos.

Text-only rikishi profiles, simple-style results and the new simple-style banzuke should work. Hoshitori can also be grabbed from the banzuke and torikumi sidebars. Thank you.

That's pretty much how I import data from DB query output, too. One small addition that could make this more efficient: the ability to optionally suppress the yusho markers (Y/D/J) because those throw off the column count when separating the copied data by space character. Low priority request, of course, but it's the type of thing that always bugs me just a tiny little bit. I had a different issue with pasting to excel recently: excel doesn't recoginze the black and white circles that the database uses to indicate wins or losses. Does anybody know a way around this? Thanks, HK

You are right. If the standings were absolute and did not have to necessarily have the Ozeki's in front of all the others (Sekiwake, Komusubi and Maegashira), Baruto would be at the third place, not at the seventh. He must still learn some sumo, though ... His fantastic power is not always enough to win. Anyway current ozeki's performances are so erratic that he should have no problem to make 11/12 wins consistently and become an ozeki soon. I for my part think Baruto still ranks behind Harumafuji and Kotooshu--notwithstanding the head-to-head victories at this basho--in particular as regards their ability to put pressure on the Yokozuna. I'm not even sure whether I'd consider Baruto having bypassed Kotomitsuki. It's not that Baruto is winning regulalary against these guys. This said, I agree Baruto would, by now, make a fine Ozeki.

The "internet rating system" on the other hand..... *hint* *hint* (Neener, neener...) (Annoyed...) I agree of course that the Abe-index is flawed, but it has been the only quality-related index been readily available online (and with some modifications one can extract more useful information from it, imo)

The first candidate for "ozumo bout of the year".
-
Great work from Doitsuyama as always. I for my part will miss the Abe quality index from the scgroup website, but I guess it's asking too much to include also this.
-
Ahhhhhh..... it is back. (Sign of approval...) Thank you.
-
Of those who have followed him more regularly last year -- do his performances live up to what the numbers promise?

..... seem relatively rare (today there was a straight butt in Toyohibiki Sagatsukasa, and also some head contact in Kotooshu Kisenosato. Maybe also in Kotomitsuki Miyabiyama),. I wonder how the rikishi manage to do this?
-
Thank you, lots of very insightful responses (as usual on this forum).

... gets 12 wins this basho -- would it suffice? Or does the 9 in the last basho set him back too much (such that even a total of 33 or 34 would not cut it)?
-
Yobidashis who carry the sponsor's banner around the dohyo. (Tears forming...) I see. Does it matter to what athletes they give the envelopes? Or does an envelope to Baruto buy you the same advertising time as an envelope to Kisenosato? Why is there more cash in Yokozuna-bouts than in any other? Sorry, lots of probably rather daft questions from a remote-video-watching sumo fan.
-
Can someone help me with an ignorant question: what are the sponsors getting in return for stuffing money into these envelopes?
-
What exactly is she referig to? (Shaking head...) :-) (Sigh...)
-
Make or break. Also looking forward to Tochinoshin Harumafuji.
-
My hunch: 4 Hakuho 1 Kotooshu 1 Asashoryu
-
So where did you put Kotoshogiku?
