Question on current salaries

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody.

Does anybody know the current figures for rikishi salaries. I have only data of the 90s and would like to know the real salaries. This is what I have:

Monthly

Yokozuna 2,107,000

Ozeki 1,753,000

Sekiwake 1,264,000

Maegashira 977,000

Juryo 773,000

Makushita 120,000

Sandanme 85,000

Jonidan 75,000

Jonokuchi 70,000

25,000 yen for all sekitori after every Tokyo tournament.

150,000 yen to each Yokozuna before a Tokyo basho

Bonuses after a tournament

Yokozuna 200,000

Ozeki 150,000

Sekiwake 50,000

Komusubi 50,000

Yusho wages

Makuuchi 750,000

Juryo 550,000

Makushita 250,000

Sandanme 100,000

Jonidan 100,000

Jonokuchi 50,000

Sansho wages: 550,000 yen

And what about "hoshokin"? Is it yet working? How does this system exactly work?

Thanks to all of you.

Regards.

The few things I know are as follows, others can probably supply a more comprehensive answer:

Yokozuna 2,107,000

Last year's yokozuna salary was a total of 2,820,000 yen per month, as per Jonosuke. I could swear there was a post somewhere a couple of months ago confirming that this remains the yokozuna salary for 2006, but darned if I can find that post right now...

The other sekitori salaries, taken from this post by Zentoryu:

Ozeki 2,347,000 (five-sixth of a Yokozuna salary)

Sanyaku 1,693,000 (three-fifth of a Yokozuna salary)

Maegashira 1,309,000

Juryo 1,036,000

These are from 2001, but given that the Yokozuna still gets paid the same, these should also still be correct.

Makushita 120,000

Sandanme 85,000

Jonidan 75,000

Jonokuchi 70,000

I suspect these are still the same, but I'm not sure.

Bonuses after a tournament

Yokozuna 200,000

Ozeki 150,000

Sekiwake 50,000

Komusubi 50,000

Note that these are only for completed tournaments. AFAIK the payments are one-third for 1 to 5 days competed, two-thirds for 6 to 10 days, and full payment for 11+ days.

Yusho wages

Unless they've changed recently, I believe these are:

Makuuchi 10,000,000

Juryo 2,000,000

Makushita 500,000

Sandanme 300,000

Jonidan 200,000

Jonokuchi 100,000

(Taken from the not-existent-anymore site of Akinomaki...I'd add an archive.org link, but those guys seem to have traffic problems right now.)

Sansho wages

2,000,000 per sansho, AFAIK.

And what about "hoshokin"? Is it yet working? How does this system exactly work?

Nearly everything you've ever wanted to know about hosho-kin can be found here, courtesy of Zentoryu once more. That reminds me...now that Kitazakura is back in Makuuchi, perhaps we can finally settle the long-standing question of how the lower-division kyukin numbers are worked out...assuming Nikkan has an accurate total for him this time.

You are very kind, thanks a lot for all the info. (Showing off...)

Only one more comment, it is pretty surprising how the wages for getting a Yusho in Makuuchi grow from 750.000 y to 10.000.000... thats more than 1000% in ten years.

I can imagine how Asashoryu (Showing respect...) would like to get again six out of six (Clapping wildly...)

Where did you find that 750,000 yen number? As far as I know, it was 5,000,000 yen until it was doubled in 1994. It would be strange if a makuuchi yusho was ever only 3x as valuable as a makushita yusho...

Edit: Ah, found something that looks vaguely familiar to your list (although even that post puts the makuuchi yusho at 2,000,000 yen) - note that the poster was quoting from a book published in 1985.

It's been 10,000,000 yen for the last 13 years (since at least 1993) and had been in the millions going back into the 80's.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by Asa again...
