Manekineko 200 Posted April 15, 2003 Inter-basho blues... (Being unsure...) Anyway, when Asashoryu chose his unryuu dohyo-iri style, Akebono instructed him in it as a former yokozuna practicing the same style. But who will instruct a (hypothetical) future yokozuna who chooses shiranui? I don't remember who instructed Wakanohana, but how many ex-shiranui-yokozuna there are in the Kyokai, and how old are they? Is it possible for this unpopular style of yokozuna dohyo-iri to die out, if there comes a time when there are no living former-shiranui-yokozunas? Or will Kyokai summon ex-Wakanohana to help? I said it was an idle question... (Enjoying a beer...) ps. This certainly shows it's high time for Kaio to earn his tsuna, pick shiranui, and honourably retire after a year or two of injury-plagued career and a yusho. (Being unsure...) Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted April 15, 2003 (edited) I don't remember who instructed Wakanohana, but how many ex-shiranui-yokozuna there are in the Kyokai, and how old are they? (In a hurry...) I think it was Takanosato. Other shiranui style former yokozunas include Asahifuji (Ajigawa), Kotozakura (Sadogatake) and Futahaguro (although I doubt he'll come to instruct anyone). Shiranui rules. Even yokozuna Kotoseiya has a shiranui tsuna. See! I specifically ordered that little loop in the left!!! (Enjoying a beer...) Zenjimoto 40 Posted April 15, 2003 See! I specifically ordered that little loop in the left!!! (Being unsure...) Then that explains your recent dimise in the various sumo games, and plummeting down the Super Banzuke (Enjoying a beer...) If you had only chosen unryuu!! (Being unsure...) :-) Cheers Zenjimoto
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted April 15, 2003 In the unlikely case no living yokozuna could instruct a new yokozuna in the shiranui style, I would suspect two possibilities, in this order of likelihood: - An oyakata who knows the procedure would instruct verbally, without demonstrating, or - The new yokozuna could watch a video As I said, the first is more likely of the above two, but I don't think either of the above two is very likely over all. It would have to be something like 40 years straight without a shiranui dohyo-iri yokozuna for all the existing ones to die, no? (Enjoying a beer...)

QttP 0 Posted April 16, 2003 Superstition is a powerful thing. A powerful thing indeed. Should Chiyotaikai become yokozuna, I'm pretty sure he'll choose shiranui, though. Because it's considered offensive (as opposed to unryuu, which is considered defensive), and Taikai's style is clearly an offensive one. Somebody has got to break the jinx. Asashoryu didn't have the guts.
