Day 15 results, yusho and sansho

Recommended Posts

Asashoryu won against still fellow Ozeki Musoyama in strong manner and wrapped the victorious basho up in good style. His final margin to second place are three wins as Wakanosato lost to Dejima; he really was the only real yusho contender this basho. Let us hope that the other Ozeki and Yokozuna will not only fight against kadoban, injury or retirement like the last two basho, but compete for the yusho.

Even with his loss today Wakanosato looks like a candidate for a third Sekiwake with an 11-4 record, while Takanonami lost and will be in the hira-maku ranks again next basho. Good candidates for the Komusubi rank are Tosanoumi who got his kachi-koshi today and Dejima with 11-4 at M3.

Tochinohana's win could save him from demotion, but Kobo, Tamakasuga and Otsukasa will be in Juryo next basho and Jumonji and Gojoro are really close with 5-10 at M11 and M10.

Buyuzan failed in two attempts to win the Juryo yusho, first in his regular day 15 bout against Kitazakura who saved himself in the paid ranks and then in the playoff against Asasekiryu, who completed the foreign yusho sweep. Only the Jonidan yusho was won by a Japanese.

Buyzan, Asasekiryu, Takekaze and Kinkaiyama are sure of a promotion to Makuuchi next basho, the first for Asasekiryu  and Takekaze but already the seventh for Kinkaiyama, a record for active rikishi. Jumonji could managed to stay in Makuuchi for the reason of lacking additional candidates for promotion.

I know at least one person on this board will be happy to see Kinkaiyama back in makuuchi  :-(

I will also be happy to see Buyuzan back.  He is a fun rikishi to watch usually, although admittedly he is not always top-level, and his consistency is not very good.
