Manekineko 200 Posted January 19, 2003 Yes, it's Sunday, I have ample time to waste, so here's a look at Europeans and some other favourites... Takanoyama began this basho with two wins but continued with two losses, so he's neutral 2-2 on Nakabi. Ganabare! Bulgarian Kotooshu won 4 straight in his hatsu-dohyo basho, 4-0 and already kachikoshi on Nakabi. I should've adopted *him*, and not that make-koshi maniac Kotokaneko, who has yet to finish a basho with kachi-koshi. He's 1-3, wining that single bout today. Kokkai won three straight bouts after early loss, 3-1 at makushita 6 he's coming closer and closer to sekitoridom. He'll look smashing in kesho-mawashi! Russians are so-so, all 2-2 except for Hakurozan (3-1). Roho lost his invincibility, loosing two straight, but he can still turn it around, and show why he is the top ranked Russian. On with foreigners... Veteran Sentory has very good 3-1 result at makushita 18, while new American in the game, Kagamifuji, got injured after his first loss, and will finish his hatsu-dohyo with 0-1-6. I wish him quick recovery! Tongan Minaminoshima is 1-3. I'll let Kintamayama-zeki fill the gaping holes in my report, and report on Ichinoya's progress. Let's turn to veterans (there's less and less of them every basho, sigh). Hamanoshima is struggling in makushita, 2-2 so far. Wakanojo, also 2-2 in makushita. Daizen with 1-7 in juryo looks to be headed to makushita, or intai. Akinoshima is having trouble even in mid-maegashira ranks, he's only 2-6 now. Hayateumi (OK, he's not a veteran, but his knees are) is having a decent basho for a change, 5-3. Nithing convincing, though. Another non-veteran Buyuzan is actually leading the Juryo yusho race 7-1, and has every chance to return to makuuchi for Haru. Chiyotenzan finaly managed to stop the free fall, but for how long? Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted January 19, 2003 Let's turn to veterans (there's less and less of them every basho, sigh). Speaking of veterans, I'll make an update on my favorite veteran, forever young Kotokanyu, 37 2nd of February. Can't help but be impressed by someone who makes his highest rank ever (J07) at the age of 35 and keeps staying close to that even later. After yet again being demoted from Juryo after Aki, one could expect a final freefall into intai, but no. He managed to squeeze by with kachi-koshi in Kyushu after a bad start, and he might just return to Juryo AGAIN. At Ms04e he lost the two first matches but came back to win the following two. I really hope he can keep this up. I fully expect him to make a smashing record of being shin-nyumaku at 39 or something :-D Another veteran, and foreign at that, Hoshitango, is languishing in Makushita as ever, and is again 2-2 at Ms23w. :-D I really hope Daizen can get some motivation back and stay as sekitori btw. :-D
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted January 19, 2003 Bulgarian Kotooshu won 4 straight in his hatsu-dohyo basho, 4-0 and already kachikoshi on Nakabi. I had been fearing that Sadogatake burned his fingers so badly with Kototenzan that he would never more recruit a gaijin again but the Bulgarian looks like the real deal so far. (Aww...) Sadogatake watch by nakabi: 54-43 (Thumbs up...)
