Recommended Posts

anybody attending the ESU, IFS sanctioned event in Ukraine?

Alternately, anybody attending the presumably non-sanctioned event in Hungary?

did a very interesting hour long phone call late last night with UK based global media outlet on the status of amateur sumo in the world today - with a particular focus on the ESU having two tourneys next week.

Should form part of at least two piece on this subject out next week.

Keep your eyes peeled.

Any update on this? Which publication and when?

and this article will appear in the Japan Times tomorrow, June 30th. From about 0850 local time on the website.

Bit overdue but hopefully raising a few questions regarding the 'elephant in the amateur sumo room'

Mark, that is a pretty even-handed treatment of the issue. I think there are a few more issues at play than you probably had space to explore, but you've hit to the heart of the current divide.

Prior to the talk of the ISA, several European federations were unhappy with the original charges for the hotel and that this was tied to registration for the tournament. I think, also, that the IFS has demonised Stephen Gadd for very minor actions. In turn, I think Stephen has quite rightly been prickly toward them in response.

I'd like to know if this gets picked up in Europe (or elsewhere) on the basis of your discussion with the media outlet.

a major UK agency with multiple papers has picked it up.

They realise they were not exactly told the truth by the original ESU official they spoke to, and others they spoke to, so are now, I understand speaking to sources on the other half of the fence.

When they release is up to them.

Hi Ivan, thanks for that. I have been checking for a while. Must be new.

I think there are no surprises with who is the winner in many weight classes. This is particularly true in the men's classes.

But, I think one sign of how very weak the event was is the presence of one UK individual on the podium as he was mailing me just before the tournament asking for advice on how to fight, what to do etc. Asking what exercises were best.

The man winning his division is a great fighter of course Georgiev Stiliyan - but that was a guaranteed gold.

Any news on videos? Or how about which nations and numbers took part?

On the results there are Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Georgia, Norway, Great Britain. 9 countries

On the internet i also see Portugal and Finland 11 countries

Maybe the Uk player wanted advice to make them better. they are maybe good but want more advice?

I see Bulgaria win most things in man and female matches in hungary and in some weight matches make 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd more than one medal.

I see the poland in Ukraine win medals alot

hi Ivan, the English guy told me he had only ever tried one time before, knew nothing about sumo, and needed help as he did not trust his coach.

Do you have any links to video of the event?

Also, why were there Hungarians in Ukraine? Some of the best Hungarians in fact?

I see that both Poland and Hungary send wrestlers to both championships. I think maybe that there is problems in leadership in those country as some want to attend senction event and others non sanction all from each country should go to one championship not 2 different ones.

I see that lots of the best hungarian women on attend Ukraine

i have no video form Hungary i have good fights from Ukraine
