Day 5 lower division results

Recommended Posts

The three former Komusubi in upper Makushita all looked

really weak to me. Chiyotenzan looked the weakest to me

despite him winning, but his bout against Kotokanyu was

not worthy of a real dohyo.

A real high class bout was Uchida winning against Tanaka,

both rikishi were very strong and technically good. Uchida

could just avoid defeat and turn the outcome around. He is

3-0 now as several other rikishi including young Mongolian

Ama.

Nadatsukasa appeared for his first bout this basho with

a HUGE bandage over his right knee. He simply overpowered

his opponent despite barely able to walk after the bout.

The young and light Toyonoshima was no match for Yoshiazuma

who is quite tall; maybe Toyonoshima isn't ready yet for

the upper Makushita. His "classmate" Kotokikutsugi got the

first win this basho.

Jk8e   Maenoshima (3-0)    kainahineri    Jk5e   Kotobuki (2-1)

Nice kimarite, not very common.

Ms19e  Kyokunankai (2-1)   utchari        Ms18w  Daishodai (1-2)

And the second nice kimarite of the day.   It's indicative of good defensive sumo and lower back strength.

Chiyotenzan looked the weakest to me

I agree.  Intai for him soon?

Thank you Doitsuyama-zeki for posting summaries for those of us, like me, who can't watch all the toriteki events   :~-(

I agree.  Intai for him soon?

I would be surprised if he did. I mean, he's still relatively young, unlike Daizen. Whatever is wrong with him could be worked out, he has time. But the question is; does he have the will to work it out?

Speaking of Daizen, 0-3 so far. Intai is looming...

Akinoshima has no additional burden of having won a makuuchi saiko yusho in this regard unlike Takatoriki had. I believe he will at least try to get repromoted if he falls down to juryo.

I read somewhere that Akinoshima said he would retire rather than face demotion to Juryo. But that's unconfirmed, so don't quote me on that.  :-(

That said, I was actually refering to Chiyotenzan's possible retirement in my origional comments.  :-)

I really don't think he will (Chiyo that is). It just seems like he's too young. But if he's lost his spirit and enthusiasm for it, then maybe he will. Either way, it sad to see what has happened to a once so promising young rikishi.

(Oh my god...)

I also heard (third hand, though) that Akinoshima expressed his firm decision to retire should he drop to Juryo, both before Hatsu and now before Haru-basho started. Maybe he's simply sick of wrestling and watching Futagoyama-beya crumble... Maybe he doesn't want to do those push-ups anymore. ;)

But I do believe he'll retire... wrestling as he does lately, staying on in Juryo would simply prolong the agony for another few basho. And Akinoshima is a samurai at heart, he wouldn't allow that.

He's 1-5 now. 6-9 at M12W might be enough with good banzuke luck so he would need 5-4 at least from now on. That doesn't look too likely considering his lack of form. Enjoy him while you still can. :~-(

There is another factor to be considered... The Kinboshi. All 16 of them. As long as he wrestles he gets steady monthly pay just for them. Now, I really don't know - does one get paid for past kinboshi while in Juryo or only while in Makuuchi? It would seem logical to get payed in Juryo too. If so, then wrestling a couple more bashos for that (and the juryo paycheck too) wouldn't be too terrible.

Daizen also... it really looks like he's spent.

Daizen really should go. Now that he's in Makushita and he's 0-3, it shows that his time is up. He had a good career, though. Not brilliant, but good. He shouldn't have hard feelings about retiring.

Tenzan? It really does depend on his will-power, but i have a sinking feeling that precisely the lack of it led to his downfall... I haven't heard of any physical injury. So, if he lost his fighting spirit, the best thing for him would be to retire.

With Tenzan it's 100% about mentality and fighting spirit. However, unlike physical injuries, these are things he can change, and being young, he still's got time. It's all about what he wants - if he still wants to do sumo, he'll climb back up again.

Really?  I thought you got one time bonus for each one, and that's it?

No, each kinboshi really is a lifetime bonus to rikishi's pay... as long as he receives pay, so in Juryo too... But still I think Akinoshima will be true to his word and retire. He has accumulated so much kinboshi-money over the years, a few basho more or less... ;)

He makes so much money from the kinboshi bonus that his pay is said to be at or near the level of an Ozeki.

At the time Grand Sumo Fully Illustrated (see the ozumo book thread on the Sumo related questions subforum) was published, a single kinboshi was worth 25 000 yen. Sixteen of those means a bonus of 400 000 yen every basho. That's 3148 euros or 3383 US dollars (more conversions at Xe.net) every other month and quite likely the sum has been raised few times since the publishing year.

Wow, that's interesting.  A kinboshi really is a one time achievement: the maegashira was in superior condition / shape / mental shape / got lucky and defeated a yokozuna.  I like watching that (even though it tends to ruin sumo games), and I fully support a big bonus for that.  But for the whole lifetime?  Even if the maegashira never has another kinboshi?

Good for Akinoshima either way

:-(

It is NOT for the whole lifetime. Except in the very unfortunate case a rikishi dies while still ranked in Makuuchi or Juryo...

That's the way it is. A rikishi gets to collect his kin-boshi bonus every other month regardless if he ever adds to his total. He can collect on it as long as he remains an active rikishi, ie, as long as his career lasts. You could consider it a "career" pay bonus. It goes hand in hand with the incentive money that Juryo and Makuuchi rikishi get every basho, which is based on their career win totals, yusho, etc.
