Dead Heyas' Club

Recommended Posts

I once collected a list of dead heyas. Many of them live still as kabus held by various oyakata as heya-tsuki no oyakata (oyakata who don't own the heya they operate in).

I'd love to learn anything about these heyas. Anyone? I agree this is quite heavy trivia.

* Ancient heya that don't exist any more as a kabu.

** Negishi was reserved for a family of the same name who had been the printer and publisher of traditional and official banzuke for the kyokai.

*** Shonosuke was possibly related to former Kise (Kimura Sehei) -beya merged with Kiriyama-beya in 2000. Anyway it seems to have been a heya run by a gyoji when it still was possible. Shikihide (Shikimori Hidejiro) -heya is the last such exception currently run of course by a former rikishi, moto-komusubi Oshio.

**** Kashiwado was naturally the yokozuna of the 1960's but I doubt he had a heya by his own name, possibly a dojo instead or then (and I think this is the most likely explanation) this was a more historical heya.

***** Futabayama's dojo in early 1940's, I guess.

Dojo was historically a coaching ring set up by a still active rikishi that eventually separated to a heya of its own. Nimai-kansatsu was historically a rikishi who had become a toshiyori while still continuing his active career.

Um,... in this case, that's probably a good thing, for the english-speaking fans :)
