Tomozuna-beya was established by former maegashira Kaizan of Osaka sumo in 1892. It belongs to Tatsunami-Isegahama ichimon and is currently led by moto-sekiwake Kaiki. Tomozuna-beya operates with 14 rikishi, 1 yobidashi, 1 sewanin and 1 tokoyama. The most recent newcomer Kaishinho started his career in Natsu basho with 4-3 record in jonokuchi.

Mini-stable Takekuma`s brother rikishi used trained by Tomozuna-beya as they don`t even have a real practise dohyo. Now the older brother Haguronada has retired though leaving his younger brother the only active Takekuma-rikishi. Haguronada also acted as Kaio`s tsukebito.

Tomozuna-beya doesn`t have an official website but there are few sites dedicated more or less to Kaio.

Oldest rikishi in Tomozuna-beya is Sentoryu who turns 33 in July. Kaio is the second oldest and is about 3 years younger than Sentoryu. Kaio was born 24th of July in 1972. Kaio has now the upper hand in his 13 months battle against lower back injury and expectations are high for Nagoya basho. Sentoryu is recovering from achilles tendon surgery but vowed to keep on fighting and persevare. The present status of his achilles tendon is unknown to me.

Tanaka is Tomozuna-beya`s third in order of ability and rank. He is a chubby rikishi who has had his share of injuries delaying his sekitori debut. He is still only 26 years old and has now reached kachi koshi 4 times in a row in makushita:

Ms38: 5-2

Ms22: 5-2

Ms14: 4-3

Ms12: 4-3

Other makushita rikishi of present are:

Kaishoryu (23 years) 2-5 at Ms44

Kainowaka (23 years) 5-2 at Ms53 (Kainowaka is a huge rikishi, probably over 180kg)

In sandanme we find:

Kaiseizan (23) 3-4 at Sd2

Kainonami (25) 2-5 at Sd54

Sandanme-aspirants in jonidan are:

Kaishimizu (21) 4-3 at Jd96

Kaisenryu

Tomozuna-beya has had one yokozuna who without a doubt was one of the most prominent ones in the history of sumo. Tachiyama`s star started shining as Hitachiyama and Umegatani II were at the home strecht of their epic rivalry. Tachiyama never suffered a make-koshi during his 18 year long career and his record as yokozuna was next to immaculate with 84 wins and only 3 losses. Tachiyama was very tall at 190cm and mastered the then newly emerged pushing sumo but was powerful in traditional belt-sumo as well. With his 150kg body he went on winning 43 bouts in a row and then lost to future legend yokozuna Tochigiyama but continued his winning habits by taking a respectful 56 wins in a row after the single loss. However later he admitted that his loss to weak yokozuna Nishinoumi II (the loss which ended his second winning streak) was fixed.

Tachiyama retired about a year after Kokugikan burned in 1917 and vanished from sumo world. However some innovative individual got an idea of inviting him to perform the first kanreki dohyo-iri when his 60th birthday approached. Seemingly healthy and bald Tachiyama perfomed his dohyo-iri gracefully and started a new tradition which has not been followed very consistently since though.

According to Sentoryu himself he should be more or less ready for Nagoya basho and he also commented on Kaio`s arm injury by saying "it shouldn`t be too bad" and participation in Nagoya is likely.

The address of his website as most of you already now. He has already answered on many messages on the guest book on his site(BBS)! Very neat
