Fujisan 533 Posted June 5, 2003 I was reading The Wolfs records from his early years-Did you know in 1974 he was demoted from Makuuchi to Makushita division before his eventual rise to legendary status? Theres hope for all of us.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted June 5, 2003 (edited) Interesting fact I wasn't aware of. Chijanofuji's Chiyonofuji page has all the details. Oh, BTW, look at the Kyushu Basho row on Chija's table... Edited June 5, 2003 by Kotoseiya Yuichi
Fujisan 533 Posted June 6, 2003 Thanks Koto-I love this sort of trivia. Another interesting point from his record,in his first two promotions to the sanyaku ranks his scores where 5-10 and 6-9-Not good signs for future greatness. Oh and I already knew about The Wolf winning Kyushu 8 years in a row.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted June 6, 2003 Oh and I already knew about The Wolf winning Kyushu 8 years in a row. Me too but I bet that kind of domination of a single basho must have been a surprise to at least some of the readers. Probably a statistical fluke, though. Or perhaps Chiyonofuji preferred cool weather. (Applauding...)
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted June 6, 2003 Which begs the question, is 8 wins in a row of the same basho the longest such streak? Has anyone won the same basho more than 8 years in a row?
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted June 6, 2003 Has anyone won the same basho more than 8 years in a row? Very few yokozuna would even have a chance for that as majority of them doesn't win eight yusho even all bashos combined. I checked the four obvious candidates and found the following yusho streaks. Chiyonofuji Kyushu Basho, eight times, 1981-88 Takanohana II Aki Basho, five times, 1994-98 Kitanoumi Haru Basho, five times, 1977-81 Taiho Haru Basho, four times, 1963-
Fujisan 533 Posted June 8, 2003 Well Yoavo, since that kyushu record earnt The Wolf a mention in the Guiness book of records,I'd say its a certain unbeaten record.
