Debut Haru 1936

I had to check Wikipedia because this interested me. He was born on December 3rd 1925 and the 1936 Haru basho was in January - so he would have just turned 10 years old.

Was it common for gyōji (and possibly other urakata) to join at such young ages back then?

Edit: he was also recruited into sumō by none other than the 19th Shikimori Inosuke

I didn’t know that he was still alive! He was my favorite back then and I remember when he retired. He had wonderful voice.

It was, especially for gyoji: they joined as mame-gyoji - something changed in 1947, they were made to go to school. But also rikishi joined at a much younger age. Middle school graduation became obligatory in 1973

He was a great gyoji, one of my favourites along with his immediate successor as tate-gyoji.  There was also a great sanyaku gyoji of that era - can't remember his name - but he took charge of most ozeki/sekiwake bouts.

Not sure if this is the right place (would be glad to start another thread if not), but Mitakeumi's father has just passed away on 5 July.

https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202307060000728.html

Ōmichi Haruo was 74. The cause of death is not stated. Mitakeumi was allowed to return to Kisō town immediately to be mourner-in-chief, although Dewanoumi oyakata said that he would be back in time for shōnichi.

Not right, I think there is a separate thread for rikishi family member.

According to Sponichi, his shikona is pronounced Koshinishiki

I searched for him as Koshinishiki at first, but didn't find him - the DB has him as Etsunishiki#, needs to be updated

I was astonished to read that 35% of his wins were by tsuridashi (all at Juryo or above, since there are no records in the db for his lower-rank career).

Looks like on two occasions he was involved in playoffs with yokozuna. First with Taiho, then with Kashiwado and Sadanoyama

Myobudani used his real name 明歩谷 as shikona with just a different middle kanji 明武谷 - martial art for walking. With about 190cm he was a tsuridashi specialist with crane as nickname. With Yoshibayama in the end at the new Miyagino-beya, that now ends. Model for the un-gyo kongo-rikishi statue at the Asakusa temple Sensoji (a-gyo Kitanoumi o - can't be, both statues were made in 1962 ),

he was also popular among the foreign sujo of the time. As Nakamura-oyakata he left the NSK after he joined a christian sect.

He was in a tomoe-sen with Taiho and Kashiwado Aki 1961, who both were promoted to yokozuna after the basho

Myobudani (we used to call him Danny) was my favorite rikishi growing up. He was somehow different than the run of the mill rikishi. Him and Wakachichibu. And Tsurugamine (Terao's dad), the Tamawashi of back then. Other than Taihou and Kashiwado of course, who were idolized beyond recognition.
