So I feel some connection to him." Toyohibiki, a close loss to oozeki Kotoshougiku: "My tachiai was good. Not having lost at the tachiai makes me self confident but ..." Myougiryuu, having a bitter experience against Tochiouzan. On his performance halfway into the basho: "Winning against 4 oozeki I was surprised at myself, but if I lose with this kind of sumou, it doesn't have any signficance." Takayasu, finally collecting a win at the top maegashira rank: "I'm not makekoshi yet. With this as a start, I want to get a series of victories." Source: jiji.com/jc/c?g=spo_30&k=2012051300222 On Hakuhou: Before the bouts against the 6 oozeki, he has consecutive losses against sekiwake and below. He blushed, and after uttering this single word, he closed his eyes and kept his mouth shut against all questions. This basho, his solid sumou of yorikiriing using his special migi-yotsu grip isn't there either. On the first day when he was defeated by Aminishiki, although he injured his left index finger, what is rather worrisome is the instable way of his lower body. Kitanoumi rijichou also pointed out: "His sense for keeping the feet on the ground isn't there. When he attacks he lacks stickiness." Source: http://www.yomiuri.c...-OYT1T00662.htm Hakuhou, after the bout in the shitaku beya, just said: "My movement didn't go well." Until yesterday, when he also lost, he was answering several of the press corps' questions. This silence is indicating a mental shock the sumou world's leading person has recieved. Source: http://mainichi.jp/s...050062000c.html

  2. Ah, thanks a lot, that makes a lot more sense. I interpreted 入られて as potential rather than passive, but I see that literally "I was got inside" matches with what you wrote. And I didn't think that 向こう could be opponent here, was used to that being 相手.
  3. Houmashou, at last getting a win in his komusubi return basho: "First of all I'm feeling relieved. From here on I want to regain my strength." Kakuryuu, having an oozeki bout as early as day 8 against Baruto, calmly: "Sooner or later I will fight him anyway, so first things first without being aware of this." Kotooushuu, 400 makuuchi wins, with the facial expression of a father: "This number doesn't do much as an encouragement. My encouragements is seeing the face of my child." Baruto, falling to Goueidou's sotogake: "I could get into the center, and the distance to my aite was a bit close. I was also investigating the other side, so it'd have been good if I had attacked with caution." "I gave up an inside grip and got a bit too close. My opponent has obviously been doing his homework, so I should have attacked with more caution". 向こうも研究しているし、慎重に攻めればよかった」 Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c...k=2012051200277 Hakuhou, swallowed by Toyohibiki's turnaround throw, sticking to his manner of speaking and accepting his loss. Reflecting indifferently: "I was understanding I was falling down first. Sumou-wise I won, record-wise I lost." Hakuhou, on day 8 taking on the challenge of the vigour driven Goueidou who defeated Baruto, putting strength into his words: "My aite will come with with a feeling of 'I'm good myself too'. He will not block me." 8日目は、把瑠都を破って勢いに乗る豪栄道の挑戦を受ける。 Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c...k=2012051200292
  4. Very late today, but better late than never I guess. Kyokutenhou, one more win until 794, the tenth place for overall career wins, currently held by Takanohana: "I'm highly aware of it, you know. As it is, I want to go there, right?" Aminishiki, not able to continue with the oozeki crushing from the previous days: "I thought my opponent would come to raise me up. 5. Asasekiryuu, getting a win by chongake. Already used this technique in Natsu 2010 against the same Wakanosato: "I remember that. However, because it is dangerous sumou, I want to amend this habit." Miyabiyama, his aite's right foot left the dohyou and he picked up a win. The losses are accumulating, but I'm already experienced (with that)." Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c?g=spo_30&k=2012051000972

  6. Thank you for your corrections, they are greatly appreciated. Yeah, I was having quite a bit of trouble with Kakuryuu's quote, and I wouldn't have guessed these meanings. Seeing your explanations and comparing them with the Japanese text makes everything fall into place, so I get the meaning of the single parts of these sentences now. This is very insightful, thank you again. It also seems to me that と is used in a lot more situations than I had thought/learned.
  7. Myougiryuu, facing the yokozuna for the second time without getting a kinboshi: "Only 15 people per basho can partake in the musubi no ichiban. In order to do so again, I will gambarize." Kisenosato, Defeating heavy Gagamaru by yorikiri to get his fourth consecutive win: "I am not thinking that is good. I made sure not to be carried away at one blow." Baruto, first kuroboshi: "[My movement] wasn't bad, but a loss is a loss. Tomorrow is another bout." Hakuhou, not stopping movement when Myougiryuu's right hand touched the dohyou: "I had that feeling [that he touched the clay], but my aite got up again so I became confused and kept holding him down." Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c?g=spo_30&k=2012050900968 Just Jiji's Shitaku Beya report, Pandaazuma might fill in with more later.
  8. What I meant to say is, it takes me quite a bit of time to do these as I have to look up a lot of stuff, so I feel just doing the Shitaku Beya reports from Jiji would be about the right amount for me. So if you're ok with it, I'd propose I just do these, and you can fill in with other reports you can find. And on the days you don't have time for it, tell me and I'll try to do a bit more.
  9. Can't find the NHK source from the last two times, so this is a bit shorter. Chiyotairyuu, with a smiling face: "It was challenging, but I thought I wanted to go all out." Wakanosato, on three consecutive wins from day 1, with a humble and satisfied smile: "That's unusual, eh? But 3 consecutive wins are something common." Toyohibiki, hitting the floor almost at the same time as Kotooushuu: "I thought I had lost. Not having given up till the end was good." Hakuhou, without answering on the issue of his injured left hand, uninterestedly: "It was the usual flow." Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c?g=spo_30&k=2012050800897 Baruto, pushing Myougiryuu out of the dohyou: "Because my body is moving, I am stepping forward." Before the bout, Myougiryuu's shishou, Sakaigawa oyakata, said: "In order to make him become confused at the tachiai, he needs to attack from the side." On Baruto: "Recently, he gets attacked from the side a lot." If you stop grappling, you will take into consideration the opponent's expectation, who tries to avoid to be caught by the oozeki who exhibits unequaled power, he says. [i'm at a total loss with this last sentence, and I can't find 組み止める or 言いたげる anywhere.] Kitanoumi Rijichou, on Baruto, who was already showing good content on the first two days without letting Toyonoshima or Takayasu come close: "He's doing sumou that is to my satisfaction." Source: http://mainichi.jp/sports/news/20120509k0000m050091000c.html

  10. Ok, then I'll continue with this in full until day 3, and when you got more time (tell me when you don't), I'll limit myself to just translating the Shitaku beya reports from Jiji press (I suppose they are released daily). I'm afraid I can't produce translations in the same quality you could, but I'm doing my best.Yeah, it's definitely a nice way to train my Japanese, but admittedly it's quite a bit different from textbook Japanese, with a lot of casual wording and grammar constructs where I sometimes can only guess what they are supposed to mean.
  11. Kimikaze got two consecutive losses as shinnyuumaku. However, as he's been attacking the whole time, he said vigorously: "I was able to attack with good flow. From tomorrow on I'll also go out with courage." Gagamaru, pushing out the quick-witted Harumafuji: "Not losing through the speed at the tachiai, and having kept my lower arms tucked in (?) was good." Kotooushuu, having his bout after two other oozeki had lost, and losing himself as well. Asked whether this had any influence on his loss: "Absolutely not." Kisenosato, having started the previous basho with the opposite of two consecutive wins: "I was careful not to let the bout develop in my opponent's pace. At least at the end it was dangerous." 最後だけは危なかった」 Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c...k=2012050700830 Oosunaarashi, easily pushed Kotooomura out by breaking into his body through the hit of the tachiai. On his first bout while having his shikona on the banzuke, he said: "Today, it was good sumo. This basho I want to win the yuushou." Source: http://www.daily.co....005033771.shtml Kakuryuu, after the tachiai immediately started pulling and got pushed out: "My opponent managed to bring up the power not to fall down." "My opponent is coming over to eat (?). But if I don't win, it's no good." "I thought my opponent fell so I let up a bit (which was a mistake..).." "My opponent is coming at me to swallow me up. I have to win against this." Goueidou, victorious over Kotooushuu by sukuinage: "I'm not really aware of the 6 oozeki. What comes now is important." Kotoshougiku, mounting the dohyou after three consecutive losses by oozeki: "I just do things steadily. Because I'm doing my own sumou, my mood is very calm." Kisenosato, two consecutive wins, but not satisfied with his technique: "It'd have been good if I could have gone out boldly. (?)" Hakuhou, defeating Aran calmly: "You might say I was able to do sumou as usual without a change." Source: http://www3.nhk.or.j...4946731000.html
  12. I'm giving a try at finding and translating rikishi talk snippets. My knowledge of the Japanese language is somewhat limited, so I put the original pieces below my translations. I've been learning Japanese for a while, so I'm doing this in part as an exercise. Those who are more proficient in Japanese than me and find mistakes are encouraged to point them out, I'm very thankful for corrections. I might or might not do this for some more days, depending on how much spare time I can find. Chiyotairyuu winning as shinnyuumaku on the first day, with a wry smile: "Content-wise, it wasn't good. I stepped sideways without getting into it at all. It will make my shishou angry." Kyokutenhou, having set records like 10th place for most bouts in Makuuchi: "Because I came and did Sumo for 20 years with all its troubles, I want to leave my my name behind through something." Harumafuji, on the first 6-oozeki basho: "About the other oozekis' records, I'm not aware of them, I don't think about it. I just have to focus on myself first and foremost." Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c...k=2012050600166 Baruto, winning over Toyonoshima by tsuridashi, to the delight of the spectators: "I actually wanted it to become hidariyotsu." Baruto failed his tsunatori the previous basho. Before today's torikumi, the yuushou portrait from hatsu basho which he won was exhibited. "I want to be sure not to forget my thoughts towards the yuushou. I will motivate myself some more and gambarize." Source: http://jiji.com/jc/c...k=2012050600174 Kakuryuu starting with a win into the first basho since becoming oozeki: "Against my opponent who was coming out low, not having pulled him was good." About the fans' support, with a smiling face: "I'm happy about the applause and cheering, and I think I shall gambarize." Kotoshougiku, about having 6 oozeki: "I know about being compared, so I do my own sumou without thinking about this too much." Aminishiki: "The zabuton flying gives a good feeling. I was floating rather than thinking, and then the surprise happened. (?)" On all 6 oozeki winning: "There's the pressure about who will lose first." Source: http://www3.nhk.or.j...4923775000.html
  13. Many thanks from me as well. Especially with the integration into Sumo Reference it's been a great service. I'm not sure whether there's anything going on behind the scenes already, but here are some of my thoughts and ramblings: It seems to me that the only part that can't really be automated is determining the start and end times of each single bout. It shouldn't be hard to write a simple program allowing to log the start and end time (in, say, JST or UTC) of a bout by a simple button press at the appropriate time each. Are there people who are watching the stream live, especially lower divisions, and would be willing to do the logging? In that case I could write such a program. Assuming we have this data (i.e., for each division at least someone logging the start and end times of the bouts), and someone else recording the entire stream (noting the starting time in JST or UTC again), then the video could automatically be split into single bouts, labelled, and the videos could be uploaded to youtube. (I assume latency differences are small enough that bouts wouldn't be cut off if there are a few seconds leeway before and after each bout.) I've looked around a bit, and found a video editor with scripting support: http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ The most recent stream recording I have saved dates back to Hatsu 2011, i.e. before the improvement of the stream. So I can't test the program properly right now, for these streams however I haven't found a setting yet that produces videos without any artifacts. For video uploading, I found this, haven't tested yet though as I don't have a youtube account: http://code.google.c...youtube-upload/
  14. According to Jiji, both Yoshikaze and Tosayutaka are kyuujou from Day 13. Tochiouzan and Takamisakari will receive a fusenshou. Yoshikaze injured his right foot, see Kintamayama's report: http://www.sumoforum...showtopic=29453
