good day all, the first torch match happened on day 3. the WILDCARD picks of Jk33e and Morikawa (the default lowest rank and rikishi) earned him only 2 points (1 for the rank losing, 1 for the rikishi losing). the torch has passed. i will only be updating when an entrant's chosen rank or rikishi is involved in torch match. -shimodahito

good day all, this is the last day for your entry chance of the year. you can post here, or send to me at shimodahito@yahoo.com. best of luck to all entries and thanks for participating. -shimodahito

good day all, happy new year. a few more entries have come my way and i thank everyone who is participating. doitsuyama, one of my top 5 sumo forum favorites, is quoted as saying: "This might be the silliest sumo "games" I have ever seen and I have seen them all." well i hope now that banzuke has been released, doitsuyama is ready to submit an entry. (Neener, neener...) the wildcard's chosen rikishi is Morikawa. the wildcard's chosen rank is Jk33 east. unless Morika sits out the whole year, these picks will guarantee the wildcard entrant 'torchbearer 2008' points. how wildcard does as the year progresses is anyone's guess. deadline for entries is the saturday, january 12th... JST. happy picks. -shimodahito

good day all, just a reminder to enter the "pick the 2008 torchbearer" contest. to date, i've received entries from: Peterao Hitotsuboshi Daughter of Sukubidubidu Jejima Profomisakari kaiguma Konizan j.maciel terarno Ganzohnesushi Gusoyama wildcard the torch will start with the last rikishi on the 2008 HATSU BANZUKE. a rikishi will pass the torch to whoever beats him during the tournaments. please submit: 1) the name of the rikishi you think will end up with the torch at the end of the 2008 KYUSHU BASHO. and 2) the rank of the rikishi that will end up with the torch at the end of the KYUSHU BASHO. i made a slight modification to the points taking in some suggestions from forum members... 50 points if you get the final torch holding rikishi. 50 points if you get the final torch holding rank. OR (if the exact rank and/or rikishi is not chosen)... 10 points if you are closest to the final torch holding rikishi. 10 points if you are closest to the final torch holding rank. AT THE END OF KYUSHU BASHO BONUS: 10 points if your chosen rikishi is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point. 10 points if your chosen rank is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point. submission with the most points at the end of the year will get a prize (i have one year to think about what the prize will be). deadline for entries is the saturday, january 12th... JST. My picks for final 2008 torch holder - rikishi: Masatsukasa (from aomori!!!) rank: Makushita 3 West -shimodahito

good day all, based on my torchbearer 2007 experiment, i've decided to open this up as a pick the 2008 torchbearer contest. the torch will start with the last rikishi on the 2008 HATSU BANZUKE. a rikishi will pass the torch to whoever beats him during the tournaments. please submit: 1) the name of the rikishi you think will end up with the torch at the end of the 2008 KYUSHU BASHO. and 2) the rank of the rikishi that will end up with the torch at the end of the KYUSHU BASHO. 50 points if you get the final torch holding rikishi. 50 points if you get the final torch holding rank. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR: 3 points for every torch match your chosen rikishi wins. 3 points for every torch match your chosen rank wins. 1 point for every torch match your chosen rikishi loses. 1 point for every torch match your chosen rank loses. AT THE END OF KYUSHU BASHO: 10 points if your chosen rikishi is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point. 10 points if your chosen rank is one position from the final torchholder, 9 points if two positions, 8 if three positions... and so on down to 1 point. submission with the most points at the end of the year will get a prize (i have one year to think about what the prize will be). deadline for entries is the saturday, january 12th... JST. My picks for final 2008 torch holder - rikishi: Masatsukasa (from aomori!!!) rank: Makushita 3 West -shimodahito

good day all, back in early january i proposed an idea (on the mail list) to start the torch at the bottom of the banzuke and see where it would end up at the end of the year. there was no interest. a few responded that it was unlikely the torch would make it far because it was more likely that a rikishi with the torch would be injured or quit sumo. so the 2007 torchbearer never developed. but i tracked it. - the lowest ranking rikishi on the HATSU BANZUKE was Sugishita at Jonokuchi 36 west. - he lost his torch his first match to Jk36e Kanekuni, who kept it for two more matches. - he lost the torch on day 8 to Hisanoumi (Jk29w), who kept it for two more matches. - he lost the torch on day 13 to Wakataizen (Jonidan 95 east), who lost it in a kettei-san to the Jonidan Yusho winner, Oseumi (Jd50w). - when the HARU BANZUKE came out, Oseumi was ranked Sandanme 50 west. the torch moved fast! - Oseumi lost it on day 1 to Tamaryoma (Sd50e) who kept it for two more matches. - he lost the torch on day 7 to Kurusawa (Sd49w) who lost it on day 9 to Kiozan (Sd36e). - Kiozan kept it for three matches including the kettei-san match against Hikarikaze which won him the Sandanme yusho. - when the NATSU BANZUKE came out, Kiozan was ranked Makushita 27 east. the torch moved fast! - he lost the torch his first match to Takunishiki (Ms27w), who lost the torch his next match to Tochinoshin (Ms28e) who kept it for one match. - he lost the torch to Shironoryu (Ms23w), who lost the torch his next match to Yanagawa (MS16e), who lost the torch his next match to Wakakirin (Ms3w). - Wakakirin won his next match and won the Makushita Yusho. The torch had three straight yushos! - when the NAGOYA BANZUKE was released, Wakakirin was ranked Juryo 9 west. He kept the torch for his first four matches before losing it on day 5 to Hoshihikari (J13w). - he lost the torch his next match on day 6 to Koryu (J12e) who kept it for one match. - he lost the torch on day 8 to Asofuji (J7w), who lost it his next match to Katayama (J12w), who lost it his next match to Takanowaka (Ms3w), who lost it his next match to Jumonji (J9e) on the last day of the basho. - when the AKI BANZUKE was released, Jumonji was ranked Juryo 13 west. - on day 1 Asofuji (J14e) regained the torch, but only for a day as he lost his next match to Kobo (Ms1w), who lost it his next match to Ichihara (Ms1e) who kept it for one match. - he lost the torch on day 9 to Yakigaya (Ms15e) who kept it for one match. - he lost the torch on day 13 to Tamawashi (Ms32w) in a match that won him the yusho. - when the KYUSHU BANZUKE was released, Tamawahi was ranked Makushita 2 west. - he kept the torch for one match but lost it on day 3 to second-time torch holder Tochinoshin (Ms1e), who kept it for two matches. - on day 9 he lost it to Wakatenro (Ms12e), who lost it his next match to Shotenro (Ms23e), who lost it his next match to Tosayutaka (Ms33w) on day 13 who, by winning this match, was the yusho winner. *so the torch started at the bottom and ended at Makushita 33 west. *but the highest rank the torch was at was Juryo 9 east. *i've lost track of the first torch holder, Sugishita....not sure if he dropped or changed shikona. MANY THANKS TO DOITSUYAMA'S GREAT POSTING OF RESULTS TO HELP ME TRACK THIS. -shimodahito

kyusho basho - rikishi first time meetings
shimodahito replied to shimodahito's topic in Honbasho Talk
doitsuyama, YOU ROCK. i can't imagine a basho with over 50. and 69! it's like mae-zumo all over again. much thanks. -shimodahito -
good day all, as i followed this basho i noticed that every day's makuuchi matchups included a lot of first time meetings. it seemed to be higher than average. (i think the term is hatsu-kao-awase...) did this basho make it close to the record number of hatsu-kao-awase in a single basho? what is the record? it would seem logical that a basho with a lot of first time meetings would indicate a changing of the guard or a significant new batch of rikishi replacing an old batch. and as always, a big thanks to the forum members who bring us the basho standards that i read and follow daily. line ups, results, rikishi talk, and my favorite--lower division results. THANKS! -shimodahito

that worked! :-) doitsuyama, you rock!

good day asoshosakari/doitsuyama again... i appreciate your technical guidance... much thanks. on my edit avator page, my screen doesn't show the "upload image from your computer" option that asoshosakari showed. i don't why....(if we can fix this problem, i'll make it.) ------- Welcome to your control panel Your Avatar Settings Your avatar must be no bigger than 128 pixels by 192 pixels in size. The following file types are allowed: gif, jpeg, jpg, png Your Current Avatar No avatar selected Pre-installed avatars Choose an avatar from one of our galleries Base Gallery IPB Community Pack Smiley Avatars Sumoforum Your image avatars Enter a URL to an online avatar image (Restore) Image Scale On (This will scale the image down for you if it's too big in pixel size) ---------- ...these are the only options it showed... ;-) ...so i tried doitsuyama's suggestion (yes, i want my profile picture to be my avatar)... when i right click on the picture "copy image location" is not an option so i just hit "copy", then pasted it in the URL web site of my avatar update field. i got the following notice... ---------- Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information. The error returned was: Sorry, that is not a valid file extension ---------- what do i try next?
-
good day, much thanks for your quick response. ok... avatar. thanks. i tried that. i could choose from one of four galleries (base gallery, IPB community pack, smiley avatar, sumo forum) or pick from a URL web site. uploading an image from my computer isn't an option (like it was to update my profile picture). what do i try next?

good day sumoforum gurus, when i send in a comment, how do i add my picture to the left of my comments. i'm a computer illiterate. -shimodahito
-
good day all, although i don't add much to the discussions, i'm a daily viewer of the forum.... and i want to say THANKS to jonosuke for adding the rikishi talks.... they are one of my favorite posts (along with lower division results) and often spark some interesting comments. их баярлалаа. ども ありがと. -shimodahito
-
disregard... as i posted it, i saw the jonokuchi hisa, in the jonidan results. again, THANKS! -shimodahito
-
good day doitsuyama, although your lower division results don't generate much discussion, they are my favorite posts to browse through. thanks always for keeping us informed on all the bouts. you mentioned the hisanoumi/wakataizan bout, but i didn't see it in the list of results... what rank is wakataizan? much thanks. shimodahito.

good day all, the posting of the entire banzuke in english is THE post that i most look forward to. thanks to all the translators!!! i try to track about 30 of the lower ranked rikishi. 5 of them have dropped and i'm not sure if they just changed shikona, or if they retired. any insight from the gurus out there would be appreciated. here they are: KITAKASUGA, from mongolia....last known rank Sd18w.... AZUMAO, from brazil....last known rank Sd34e.... SHINDO, from aomori....last known rank Sd58w.... KAISEIZAN, from aomori.....last known rank Sd84w.... NOGUCHIYAMA, from saitama......last known rank Jd117w.... thanks. -shimodahito
-
good day doitsuyama, you are a guru. much thanks. tomorrow`s (monday) matchups would be great also. need anything from osaka? if not, when i return home i will get with you off the forum and send you something from mongolia. you rock! -shimodahito
-
good day all, i'm planning on being in full day attendance on sunday and monday in osaka. is there any place i can get the lower division matchups for the day in english? i have seen them on the forum in the past, but am not sure who did it, or where they got it from. -shimodahito
-
good day all, thanks for the great tips. i'm travelling on a budget, so the cheaper the better. -shimodahito
-
good day all, i really am looking for some hot leads on cheap osaka hotels near the the municipal gymnasium. i'd like to spend a couple of days watching the haru basho. thanks. -shimodahito.
-
good day all, a while back, there was a thread that had great hotel recommendations for the tokyo bashos. it included hotels that were cheap and close to the venue. i'm looking for some cheap, close recommendations for the haru basho. thanks. -shimodahito
-
good day all, i'm starting to wonder if tochiazuma does better as a sekiwake. not counting tournaments that he withdrew or had absences, can anyone track down his record and compare his winning percentage as a sekiwake with his winning percentage as an ozeki? -shimodahito
-
good day all, another all-mongolian matchup is kyukushuzan vs asasekiryu. and i believe this is there first ever matchup. amazing, considering they've both been in the maegashira ranks of makuuchi for a while. so what is the longest stretch of time that two rikishi (from different heyas) have been in makuuchi without meeting? can't wait for sunday to get here. -shimodahito
