Guest Kaikitsune Posted June 12, 2002 This upcoming weekend there is a 2-day summer tournament which gives some perspective to who has been training well and who has motivation. Naturally Tochiazuma and Musoyama are absent due to their injuries. Kotomitsuki is hardly in good enough shape yet so he probably stays side-lined for now. Takanohana performs the dohyo-iri at least but it is unclear whether he actually participate in the tournament. Chiyotaikai is ready for the tournament and has only one goal: to win on both days. He still has round face and mean tsuppari.
Guest Kaikitsune Posted June 16, 2002 The first day of the tournament at Kokugikan was good when it comes to participation. 36 makuuchi rikishi were fighting including Tochiazuma whose shoulder/biceps injury has turned out to be less severe than feared. Absent rikishi were Musoyama who dislocated his shoulder in Natsu, Kotoryu who hurt his foot on senshuraku, Kotomitsuki who is training pretty hard but isn`t yet ready for tournaments and Takanohana who only performed dohyo-iri. Day 1 results and comments: 1st round: Dejima yorikiri Tamanoshima Kyokushuzan >some weird technique< Jumonji Takamisakari yorikiri Tochinohana Shimotori hikiotoshi Wakanoyama Chiyotenzan yorikiri Daizen Buyuzan oshidashi Tamakasuga Kotonowaka yorikiri Oikari Kyokutenho utchari Tokitsuumi Kaiho uwatenage Tochisakae Otsukasa hatakikomi Asanowaka Hokutoriki tsukidashi Takanowaka Akinoshima yorikiri Hamanishiki On first round Shuzan beat Jumonji with some not common technique whose kanji I can`t now interprete. Tokitsuumi who injured his inner ligaments of his right knee and evidently suffered also some bone damage has returned to competitive sumo. It is a clear indication that he has been training already as his loss came by utchari so forward momentum is there. 2nd round: Dejima oshidashi Toki Kyokushuzan yorikiri Takamisakari Chiyotenzan okuridashi Shimotori Buyuzan hikiotoshi Tosanoumi Kotonowaka uwatenage Miyabiyama Kyokutenho okurinage Kaiho Otsukasa okuridashi Hokutoriki Akinoshima uwatedashinage Takanonami On second round the first inter-heya bout was seen when Akinoshima beat Takanonami by uwatedashinage. 3rd round: Musashimaru oshidashi Dejima Asashoryu shitatenage Kyokushuzan Chiyotenzan uwatenage Tochinonada Chiyotaikai yorikiri Buyuzan Tochiazuma yorikiri Kotonowaka Kyokutenho utchari Aminishiki Wakanosato yorikiri Otsukasa Kaio yorikiri Akinoshima Musashigawa-battle between Musashimaru and Dejima started the 3rd round. Kyokutenho managed to escape from brink of defeat by capitalizing his second utchari of the day! 4th round: Musashimaru yorikiri Asashoryu Chiyotaikai oshidashi Chiyotenzan Tochiazuma yorikiri Kyokutenho Wakanosato yorikiri Kaio Kokonoe-duo had a very familiar opponent. They probably have had thousands of training bouts against each other during their careers. Today Taikai pushed his laid back stablemate out. Wakanosato is somewhat a nemesis for Kaio nowadays. Semifinals: Musashimaru yorikiri Chiyotaikai Wakanosato yorikiri Tochiazuma Final: Wakanosato oshidashi Musashimaru So Wakanosato won day 1 and so has at least two bouts tomorrow. Iwakiyama won Juryo.
Guest Kaikitsune Posted June 17, 2002 On day two Kaio was absent due to arm injury suffered on day 1. MRI-images were taken today on Monday to make the diagnosis. So far the degree of severity of the injury is unknown. When it is public I will announce it to the world using all means available.
