    Nagoya 2014 Discussion Thread

Shows the character of these two men. One can do no wrong. The other is a class-act who assumes responsibility for whatever happens. Bravo, Homasho! Not always a fan of 3x-masu but this is spot on.

    Jun-Yusho count

Glad to see Toyonoshima up there near the top - one reason I've always like his sumo is that he has shown that he can stir things up by beating almost anyone (although this is becoming less frequent of late...)

    Day 14 Pics - Nagoya 12

Hak's face is so calm, so serene in the middle of that henka, it's really striking... Especially compared to the shock so evident on Kise's face. Thanks for posting, these are great.

    English Commentary on NHK

I'm a bit slow on the uptake here... but does Nishinoshima = John Gunning? If so, I really enjoyed your commentary. I'm a big fan of MJ and always enjoy when he's commentating (is that a word?) with someone of similar ilk, for example Doreen (and now you). I think the two of you had a good balance, and I look forward to your next time on air whoever you're paired with.
  7. As a voracious reader of the ST daily reports I have to say that even though the constant questioning of every significant bout does get a bit tiring I find that overall the analysis is top notch, best on the web in my opinion. I do read SF to supplement, and there definitely is tremendous expertise on this site. I particularly enjoy posts from Kintamayama and Orion. The only issue I have is that many discussions here seem to devolve into a group of egos fighting to one-up each other on matters of minutia, and members like me ("only" been a sumo fan for 15 years, none of those in Japan) can't possibly contribute. I'm more comfortable with the slackers and ex-hippies on ST... Just my two cents. I say both sites serve a worthy purpose and have distinct fan bases, so they should continue to co-exist peacefully (like the Yankees and the Mets). Long live ST / SF!

    Gyoji - Opinions and Evaluation

35th Kimura Shonosuke is my all-time favorite for sure. I always used to wish the TV commentators would just shut up already when he was announcing musubi-no-ichiban (usually the Japanese announcers did, the English announcers tended to talk right over him). Hearing him announce the final bout live the five times I've actually made it to a basho in person has been very enjoyable. I actually think the new Kimura Shonosuke is pretty good at announcing too, he has a strong voice - I look forward to hearing him at Nagoya when I go this year. The gyoji in that "moonwalking" video is another one with real personality. And there's one guy in early Makuuchi bouts who says "te o tsuite" in a very conversational tone that always make me laugh, like he's offering some tea and biscuits... more like a polite request than an imperative.
