Shomishuu Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 Now that the late-basho henka discussions are in full bloom, I am wondering if anyone knows: When is the last time anyone who can still walk upright and chew gum henka'd Asashoryu? :-|

(Sigh...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just as I suspected...long ago and far beyond recollection. :-)
Xris Posted May 24, 2005 Posted May 24, 2005 Now that the late-basho henka discussions are in full bloom, I am wondering if anyone knows: When is the last time anyone who can still walk upright and chew gum henka'd Asashoryu? (Carried away on a stretcher...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just as I suspected...long ago and far beyond recollection. (Nodding yes...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I found one henka towards Asashoryu performed by Kotonowaka in 2001. Interestingly, Asashoryu did NOT scowl, nor make a face, or display any emotion. However, the next times he met Kotonowaka this same year, his tachiai was not so low as it was when henkaed. So it seems there are ways to avoid henkas, not just by having a towering reputation.
Shomishuu Posted May 25, 2005 Author Posted May 25, 2005 Thank you! I thought it unlikely that he would have completely avoided one...and although I'm still a henka-hater, I will acknowledge that alertness at the tachiai is not without merit. Asa's highest rank in 2001 was komusubi, and he hadn't developed his hit man rep yet, so it could have happened after that. I just don't remember it.
slt Posted May 26, 2005 Posted May 26, 2005 what is HENKA? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Henka : Side-stepping your opponent's initial charge at the tachi-ai. You can find the definition of most sumo-related terms here : http://www.sumotalk.com/glossary.htm

Jejima Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Or you could look at Shirokuma's new web-site where when he defines it like this. I like this definition.
