WAKATAKE Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 Well my friends, another Aki basho in books. And with it a successful debut at yokozuna for the Kaiju, who is now taking the reigns from the GOAT who has shockingly decided to leave the dohyo. We had hoped for a rematch between the two, but with how Hakuho performed, he very much is entitled to go out in his style. An era has come to a close, and with it a lot of record updates that won't be happening now for a long, long time. We'll have to see how Terunofuji lasts, and if he will continue to be the dominant wrestler until the next young hope rises up from the ashes. The future is always uncertain, but one thing that is certain is that we'll be seeing our Aki edition of the top 10 sumo records! hakutorizakura Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 What are the records Hakuho was aiming for before his retirement? Can't remember but I think usually he said he wanted to break this and that record...
Kamitsuumi Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 After Nagoya, Hakuho said wanted to reach 900 wins as Yokozuna. He was 1 win short at the time. 1
Tigerboy1966 Posted October 3, 2021 Posted October 3, 2021 I seem to remember him saying that he wanted to be the oldest yusho winner, but he may have been joking. He would have had to stay until Kyushu 2022 to challenge Kyokutenho.

He's made KK 6 times in the last 16 basho [amazing that he's still winning at age 51!] So, he'll need ~22 more basho to reach/beat Hakuho. Just in time for his 55th birthday in May 2025.; a good time to retire. Probably not eligible for sewanin, but maybe act as heya manager after that.

Now that's a much tougher nut to crack: 1) Sawaisamu is still active, so he's a moving (not a stationary) target. 2) And what a mover! Sawaisamu last had a KK in May 2017. The only thing that has stopped his run of MK's during this current string is a) a kyujo in November 2020, and b) miraculously, being sent back to Maezumo the next basho (he went 0-2, but it doesn't count). 3) No matter how old Sawaisamu gets, he'll always be 7 years younger than Hanakaze. 2 1
