I'm new to this.  I totally didn't expect Osunaarashi to drop so low in Juryo, nor did I think that Sokokurai would go that high.  :) Hoping to better figure out the algorithm for next time (while enjoying the show!).

Well the Mitakeumi  Shodai showdown is heating up. I do wonder how far up Ura can get, it won't be boring!

Easy enough. Just get a bunch of people with relationships ranging from brotherly love to barely disguised contempt. Then put them in a room until they agree on a single outcome. For added reality assign them various competing vested interests in that outcome as well as differing opinions on what actually constitutes a good outcome. Give them varying levels of power and influence within the group. Oh and also make sure you don't have any concrete rules.

You should stroll to victory next GTB

So, it's professional cat herding for the win! And here I was thinking that there was some method to the madness. :)

There was any doubt?

Seeing how some rankings have gone with some weird cases I've had a knack for being a bit skeptical

Finally Tokushoryu got a lucky promotion over Chiyootori. I didn't expected it. And Sadanoumi was once again very lucky... 7-8? No demotion. 8-7? 4 ranks up! ^ ^

Some banzuke topics from Nikkan:

 - Kisenosato, first Japanese born Yokozuna promotion since Wakanohana III (Nagoya 1998)

 - Takanohana was the last Japanese born Yokozuna ranked on the banzuke (Hatsu 2003)

 - Last time there were four Yokozuna on the banzuke was Haru 2000 (Akebono, Musashimaru, Takanohana, Wakanohana)

 - Kisenosato took 73 basho from makuuchi debut to make Yokozuna, which is the slowest pace since the Showa era

 - Hakuho will be trying to win yusho #38, it's been 5 basho now since he last won

 - This is the first time in 4 basho that Hakuho is the East 1 Yokozuna

 - Terunofuji only took two basho to be kadoban for the fourth time

 - First time since Nagoya 2014 that there are only two Ozeki

 - Kotoshogiku is the first ozeki to fall from the rank since former heyamate Kotooshu suffered the same fate in Hatsu 2014

 - 25 wrestlers have fallen 30 times from the Ozeki rank, 4 have successfully made it back getting the necessary 10 wins (Tochiazuma accomplished this feat twice)

 - Tamawashi is competing in his second consecutive basho at Sekiwake, third consecutive overall in sanyaku

 - Takayasu returns to the sekiwake rank for the first time in two basho, being ranked in sanyaku for five consecutive basho

 - First time since Haru 2014 that there are three Sekiwake

 - Ura is the first native of Osaka prefecture since Daishomaru (Haru 2016) to make his makuuchi debut, 21st overall since WWII

 - Ura is the first wrestler from Kansai Gakuin University, the first wrestler since Hokutofuji and Ishiura (Kyushu 2016), and 89th overall collegiate wrestler to make makuuchi

 - Kyokushuuho is in makuuchi for the first time in two basho

 - Daieisho and Tokushoryu are in makuuchi for the first time in three basho

 - Asanoyama is the first native of Toyama prefecture since Komafudo (Kyushu 1988) to make his juryo debut, 9th overall since WWII

 - First time since Kotogaume (Haru 1997) that Toyama prefecture has a sekitori on the banzuke

 - Asanoyama quickly brought Takasago beya back onto the sekitori radar after they had their 140 year sekitori streak snapped when Asabenkei fell to Makushita in Hatsu 2017

 - Asanoyama is the 11th wrestler from Kinki University, and 121st overall collegiate wrestler to become a sekitori

 - Kitaharima is in Juryo for the first time in two basho

 - Fujiazuma is in Juryo for the first time in three basho

Edit: Ura has also gotten into the speed record book with the 7th fastest rise to makuuchi from debut at 12 basho

Where did he Go?

From West Makushita #6 to East Makushita #2 with a 6-1. Only a 7-0 would have guaranteed him promotion back to juryo.

It's become a bit of a running joke around here that Osunaarashi has been harshly treated by the banzuke makers in recent tournaments but with only 4 wins at the very lowest makuuchi rank it looks about right to me.

That makes more sense than what I thought, I thought he was Ms1w to Bg

Osunaarashi is the new Konishiki.

I wasn't expecting a return to Juryo, but I was surprised not to see him as Ms1

Looks to me like the NSK wants to see a MS yusho from him to get back to juryo. I don't blame them, though. Might be good for him in the long run to slow roll his return.

I really doubt there are any such considerations in play. Since dropping to makushita he's been ranked pretty much exactly where any rikishi would have been placed under the same set of circumstances, IMHO. Anyway, 4 wins next month and he'll (probably) be back in juryo.

Six shikona changes for some of the young rikishi of Sakaigawa-beya. Sakaguchi and Uchida take shikona inspired by their Nagasaki hometowns, Hirado and Unzen respectively. The same is true for Yoshizaki from Amami, Kagoshima. Umeno is given the shikona of a former Ozeki from the Taisho era, a fellow Nagasaki native.

From Onoe-beya, the shisho's nephew Kawakami takes his given name as his shikona, while Akutsu amusingly becomes Fujinoteru (albeit not the same Teru as the hobbled Ozeki).

Perhaps most notable is a welcome change for Moriurara, now Isamiryu.

J12e Ishibashi > Asanoyama (朝乃山)
Sd12w Sakae > Yutakasho (豊翔)
Sd21e Umeno > Tsushimanada (對馬洋)
Sd41w Kawaraumi > Dewaazuma (出羽東)
Sd73w Yasui > Kiritsubasa (霧津羽左)
Sd79e Sadahikari > Sadanohikari (佐田ノ輝)
Sd81w Uchida > Unzendake (雲仙岳)
Jd17w Yoshizaki > Amamisho (奄美将)
Jd46e Sakaguchi > Hiradoumi (平戸海)
Jd61w Akutsu > Fujinoteru (富士の輝)
Jd74e Kameoka > Kamenomaru (亀の丸)
Jd95e Moriurara > Isamiryu (勇竜)
Jk15w Kawakami > Ryuko (竜虎)
Jk21e Kobayashi > Kaishinho (魁心鵬)

Couldn't stand the Ura hype, apparently.

This is the first time Mita and Sho are at equal level.   Shodai has caught up with Mita.

I don't see Ura going Kachikoshi at this basho.
