I like Takakeisho but he just doesn't seem like a Yokozuna. Perhaps he won't be promoted even if he wins the next basho.

Asanoyama's COVID violation suspension and comeback

Thanks! -
Simultaneous (human) translators can be very good, although I suppose finding one that is conversant in Sumo might be a bridge too far.

It would be wonderful if we could get all that in English, I just don't see myself learning Japanese anytime soon. Perhaps the Japanese feed with subtitles? It doesn't seem that insurmountable.

I do enjoy the commentators, and I understand that they have to allow for new fans, but do they have to assume that new fans will arrive not only every match, but multiple times within the match, so that the most basic of terms have to be explained over and over and over? Give the new fans some credit and assume that explaining the terms once per day will be enough. All that time repeating themselves could be spent sharing their insight and anecdotes.

What is the situation in Japan regarding vaccines? I'm assuming the rikishi won't have access before the January basho, but perhaps March?

Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)
Marcus33 replied to Akinomaki's topic in Honbasho Talk
I like Takakeisho, but I have a hard time seeing him as a good yokozuna. He is too much of a one trick pony, he'll never be good on the belt with those short arms. -
Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)
Marcus33 replied to Akinomaki's topic in Honbasho Talk
I do wonder if Takakeisho has, in the back of his mind, an idea that perhaps it is not such a good idea to attain Yokozuna at this time. Sure, he gets the glory now, bot loses the option to drop down the ranks and come back later. -
Is it known if he was diabetic? That would explain the CKD. Does anyone know why he wasn't able to get a kidney transplant?
-
Oh good, sorry I posted before reading this. He can deal with a torn muscle.
-
IIRC, Kise had a tendon that was mostly detached, a very serious injury. Such a pity he didn't have the surgery.
-
The big question in my mind is if Hakuho sprained/tore a bicep or injured a tendon/ligament. If it is only a muscle injury, we have every reason to expect him back next basho. Edit: Or perhaps he will skip one. A muscle tear can heal in 2 months , but perhaps not to the point where he will want to fight with it.

Thanks for the info. I don't know how all this works out for my sister, since she is in a different country every month for the most part, but I'm sure her accountants have it covered. For her anyway, if not for everyone as you have said, the exact number of days she spends in the US is crucial.

Something is just not right with Ichinojo, it's like he is protecting something by bailing out. A knee perhaps?

http://www.expatyourself.com/2013/04/330-days-outside-the-us/ "If you are a US citizen, living outside the US, then all your income may not be taxed. Yes, if you live as an expat, then at tax filing time, you can file the “Foreign Income Exclusion” form, number 2555. But, there’s a catch. (Isn’t there always a catch?) The catch is, you must really be living outside the United States for 90% or more of the time (that works to be 330 days or more). It doesn’t mean just calling your expat home your “Primary residence.” It doesn’t mean come home again for “just” the summer months. Nope, for your income to be excluded from tax, you must stay clear of the US for 330 days or more." I don't claim to be an expert, but I do know that when my sister runs up against the time limit she has to stay out of the US until the year is over.
-
If you are a US citizen living in another country, there is a limit on how many days per year you may return to the US( I think it's 35). As long as you do not exceed this limit, you are not liable for US income taxes.

Sumo articles by journalists who are Forum members/or not
Marcus33 replied to Kintamayama's topic in Ozumo Discussions
I don't know why they bother wearing mawashi, it just looks silly with all those other clothes underneath. Some male American Sumo do the same thing and it looks just as stupid. -
That was really something , watching That was really something watching tochinoshin beat hakuho. I've always had the he feeling that he was so strong, he could even best hakuho in a battle of strength if he was healthy, and now he proved it. Future yokozuna if he can stay healthy.

Seeing this makes me think that it's not merely muscles or bursa but ligaments. It that is the case he would be better off not even doing keiko for 2 or 3 months, much less entering Natsu. But maybe it's just muscles, I really like Takayasu and would like to see him continue healthy.

Women mount dohyo during emergency at jungyo
Marcus33 replied to Yubinhaad's topic in Ozumo Discussions
Eventually they will have to give up the "no girls" thing , even if it is tradition. Might as well get it over with now. -
Women mount dohyo during emergency at jungyo

I was just going to ask if this had ever happened. Sounds like it's merely an excuse. -

Even if I was a 400 lb Ozeki I would be worried about what could happen if Ichinojo fell on me, especially if it was off the side of the dohyo. -
Women mount dohyo during emergency at jungyo
Marcus33 replied to Yubinhaad's topic in Ozumo Discussions
This quote is from Chankomafuji. Here in the US, being a woman is not a disadvantage in sailing, flying, computers, only in areas where physical size and strength is an advantage. Well maybe not in sailing, being a good trimmer requires a lot of upper body endurance. In sumo, of course, women should compete against other women. I understand that "no women on the dohyo" is a tradition, but traditions do change, they are not forever. -

Well, you certainly don't live in the US , where there is no shortage of women mechanics or women chopping wood. Perhaps you live in a country where discrimination against women is rampant? Yes, women are smaller and weaker, and will never compete against men in Sumo, but the whole idea that they will befoul the dohyo merely by stepping on it seems a bit silly. Looking at your post again, I see that you agree that women shouldn't be kept off the dohyo, so I guess I'm not disagreeing with you, except for "how feminism works". As far as I know we don't have any feminists here, at least I haven't seen any.
