Dejima's loss was, I think, bit too evident (even with the help of stream) to call it close. Wakanasato's was the same. There is nothing to speculate at this moment, I think. Besides, statistics is a stitistics when there are large number of cases involve. Close match is controversial when the two wrestler's bodies (not toes or heels ) touch the dohyu. I guess, you can at least figure out what it means.

Now I'm curious: where is someone belonging on the banzuke who is capable of upsetting anyone if he wants to? Maegashira 8? So Asashoryu did it all wrong? Maybe You should write him a letter and tell him! (Clapping wildly...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> U know, wrestling is a well calculated battle. Asashoryu certainly knows where he belongs in the banzuke and this is why where he is now. Shuzan too, knows that he is not up to Kumisubi or higher. Shuzan is the one who prefers entertaining pleasant position over a do-or-die battle. It is obvious that he sometimes lack training and lose every bout with no resistance. But it is also obvious that he is working in his 50% capacity only, which draws many critics. I remember him winning Musashimaru and Asashoryu with ease. Most dangerious thing about him is his profound experience and talent, which are well compensated by his utter unwillingness to go for the yousho. He will perform badly next basho, because Sanyaku or yousho are not his goals. Besides, I heard that he is occupied with much more activities than sumo outside the dohyo. May be this is the reason. I hope you will watch him closely.

Here is an interesting picture featuring Mongolian Traditional Wrestling (or Mongolian Sumo). The wrestler who is pictured here from behind is Asashoryu's older brother Sumyabazar (Sekiwake in Mongolian Sumo) competing for the champion's title.

Well, he is capable of upsetting anyone if he want to, while he knows where he belongs in the banzuke. So, his job is just keep going with style.
-
This shows two things about him, I guess. He has a enough room to heal himself in a midst of basho. Looks, he is not a midless bullying machine, but a clever tactician.

For sure, it is not as bad as his reaction at the time. Still, he is really taking care of his shoulder. He is avoiding to raise his left arm too high. For the Kaiho case, his first serious attempt stopped when it needed a strong leverage from his left arm to Kaiho's upper body. Then resorted to a right hand throw. He used mawashi grip for Iwakiyama, then knocked out Osh. Affter three days, he is finally flexing his left shoulder. Looks he is now ready to battle against the top three opponents.

Wow, that was close! This time he really tried to pull out something. Congrats Shuzan! I am rooting for you. Do something on the next day too!

Shoes-on is a wrestlers who comes up with a clear plan for every bout. It might be the case that he won't do much this time because Tsuki looks in really good shape. I bet, everything depends on his mood. Remember the bout with Asa in May 2003 (I guess it was May). He was visibly humiliated by the younger fellow from Mongolia. Then he taught a lesson to the young yokozuna. He would probably play safe, unless he has something to really prove.

I guess, sniffing, punching his mawashi and giving a final (most of the cases not neccessary) shove to his victim are just simple habits of him. It seems that sumo is a tough sport, and everybody seem to have found a way to prepare themselves for the fight.
-
Yeah, whatever it is, it looked nasty. Hope, Osh hasn't got any serious injury. I have a feeling that Asa is sparing his left shoulder for tougher opponents, avoiding too much raising it and doing all sorts of unconventional things.

Now u sound more creative. I actually like it. So, lets get back to the business. Considering your notable experience, I would actually be glad to get the statistics from you, so that I can make up my mind, by looking at the clips, if possible. However, there are few points that might need some attention. i) it is only recently that there are so many foreign sekitoris on the arena, so statistics from the last 5 years may well be ill advised. ii) Mono iri between two foreign sekitoris is certainly of no use here, because we are talking about an entirely different case. iv) Considering the big proportion of native wrestlers, any statistics should be normalized. There will be more mono iris between native sekitoris, simply because there is more probability that this event will happen. (Something like: divide the number of mono iris by number of close matches) I guess u got it. This debate can be quite interesting, on the backdrop of decisions made by the YDC: no more than 2 foreign rikishis in any beya. Ok, thanks and g'luck with your research.

Well, just talk against the facts, if you can. Don't avoid the reality. Talk about the clips. You are behaving like a judge, but certainly not the one who can judge others. And this place is, I think, not only for you. I understand that you disagree with the idea. I also want to be proven wrong, of course. But, it doesn't mean you can convict others based on your own fantasy. What a over-reaction by the way. Just take it easy and talk facts, mate :-P !

I am by no means intending to prove it with a scientific precission. Just posting my angle of view. Look at the two clips. What is your point? (Whistling...)

Lets compare Ama-Sakari mono-iri with the Asa-Azuma case from last basho. Sakari wins eventhough he "almost" landed first. Say, he was attacking and Ama was obviously not in control, being airborne. Well, then Asa was also attacking and the Azuma has landed at the same time. I also remember mono-iris for Kotooshu, Hakuho from last basho.
-
Yep, pretty obvious, right (Tiimee, medeej mongol)
-
Its so sad that such things can happen. He was looking just awesome. (Whistling...)
-
Hakuho needs to hit a wall, a hard hit. Like Osh last basho. He is becoming more like an underachieving wonderboy, spoilt by everyone. (Whistling...)
-
I am probably bit too suspicious, but it could be interesting to see if this pattern is a real thing. Close matches with foreign rikishis tend to result in mono-iri.

Asa's chance for breaking records will most probably last by the end of this year. I am not sure if he can even make it 6 this year. By July, he will have to calculate his every moves before he faces Hakuho and he has to produce 2 more masterpieces by the end of the year. Next year, he would be quite happy see Kotooshu's every defeat, may be Roho's also. He is dominant for now because he is from a different brand of wrestling. So are Hakuho, Osh and Roho. So, his dominance will end soon. Just to share my knowledge of Mongolian Wrestling: Hakuho has already proven among Mongolians that he has more power, technique and wisdom than Asa. Hakuho's father, Munkhbat the The Absolute and Proven Champion was also very famious with his intimidating reputations. He managed to keep wrestlers of an entire country intimidated for 5 years. Asa is doing pretty well in this respect, but he certainly has a lot to learn from Hakuho's father. Well, we will see.
