I wondered about that, too. The camera showed Miyagino Oyakata looking very concerned as he watched Hakuoho lying on the dohyo wincing in pain. If I recall correctly, at one point, Hakuoho reached over and touched his taped shoulder before getting up.

Kirishima/Midorifuji match ----- another memorable one ----- funny as all get out! I loved when Midorifuji dramatically KICKED Kirishima's sagari off to the side like a star soccer player. I'm wondering what they said to each other as the minutes wore on while the hapless gyoji struggled and struggled. How can they not laugh at the absurdity of their predicament? It reminded me of the day when Yoshikaze leaped up onto the dohyo to offer his help during a similar situation. Where was Yoshikaze when we needed him? Don't they TRAIN gyoji in gyoji school on how to retie a mawashi? I was surprised to see the flying zabuton. I guess since Kirishima is currently the highest-ranked rikishi actually fighting, the spectators treated him like an ad-hoc Yokozuna. It's been almost 30 minutes and I'm still laughing about this bout. Had to get out my asthma inhaler again.

You are right! That was so funny to see his left arm just flopping around.

I've been watching sumo since 2013 and I must say, the Ura/Hokuseiho bout has to be one of the most memorable. I almost had to get out my asthma inhaler.

Sumo removed from World Games
sumojoann replied to Inside Sport Japan's topic in Amasumo Discussions
Here's a short video showing the Egyptian sumo coach's (former Maegashira Osunaarashi) reaction to the Egyptian winner having his medal taken away. He himself got taken away ---------- by the police! -
This is concerning news. In addition to the injuries to his ribs, he had also injured his right elbow and complained of back pain. He had been advised to take off 3 weeks to recover. Seems as though he is putting a lot of pressure on himself to compete. Willpower can only take him so far.

Fujisan and I communicated briefly in the middle of March and he gave me a temporary address so I could mail him a handmade get well card. But he was going to be moving very soon and I never heard from him again.

Wishing you a Happy Birthday, Stupidface, and many more! I enjoy reading your posts, and hope you will post again soon.

Longing to be a yobidashi - children's book
sumojoann replied to Amanogawa's topic in Japan-Japanese Discussions
If you scroll down on Amazon.co.jp, beneath the Yobidashi book is another children's book about sumo. It was just released and has a 5-star rating. https://www.amazon.co.jp/オゼキイサム/dp/4052056930/ref=pd_rhf_d_dp_s_pd_crcd_sccl_1_2/357-8597776-7498208?pd_rd_w=3SYrw&content-id=amzn1.sym.f6807b6a-a51f-484d-a903-9221ae683054&pf_rd_p=f6807b6a-a51f-484d-a903-9221ae683054&pf_rd_r=S8D79RSR4Q8R8KYDN205&pd_rd_wg=k05cI&pd_rd_r=6c5add0d-eb49-4e6c-8e14-ea67828a69ca&pd_rd_i=4052056930&psc=1- 1 reply

SEE MY NOTE BELOW ---------------- (POSTED BY SUMOJOANN, NOT ADIL). Super Administrators 300 1,384 posts Gender: Not Telling Location: The shop Report post ATTENTION --- THE POST BELOW IS FROM NOVEMBER 20, 2020, THE LAST TIME I RECALL A SERIOUS OUTAGE. DOES ANYONE THINK IT COULD BE A SIMILAR PROBLEM?? SO FAR, WE DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A COMPLETE OUTAGE, JUST A SERIOUS SLOWDOWN. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Posted November 12, 2020 Due to circumstances at least partially beyond our control, Sumo Forum experienced an uncharacteristically long outage. The root cause of the issue was a database server update that turned out to be incompatible with the PHP version running our forum software. The issue was discovered by forum administration during the early hours (local time) of Tuesday the 10th. It was diagnosed and reported along with the probable cause and a suggested fix to our ISP by noon. The ISP, however, refused to investigate the issue because it was not reported by "a registered contact person of the customer". It wasn't until late Wednesday that I was able to reach @Kaikitsune Makoto to confirm the service request was indeed coming from a legitimate source. Our diagnosis of the core issue seems to have been correct and the fix has now been implemented, correcting the issue. Our regular service has resumed, the management wishes to apologize for any inconvenience caused. TL;DR: Forum was down between Tuesday and Thursday, apologies." ______________________________________________________________________________________________ PLEASE NOTE ----- THE POST ABOVE WAS REGARDING AN OUTAGE IN NOVEMBER, 2020. HAS ANYONE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH ADIL REGARDING THIS SLOWDOWN? AS NOTED, THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE.

I have 2 Notifications but when I clicked on "Notifications", the system wouldn't respond and I couldn't read them. Yesterday it was slow but at least it would eventually respond.

Nagoya Ozeki Promotion Tracking (Daiesho, Hosoryu, Wakmotoharu)
sumojoann replied to robnplunder's topic in Honbasho Talk
Can you imagine how exciting it would be if all 3 of them were to be promoted to Ozeki after the Nagoya basho? I doubt if this will happen because the committee that decides would all have to be in agreement that they are all equally deserving. Their overall results histories and experience are all quite different. However, as we know, each had excellent results during the last 2 basho (Daieisho during the last 3 basho). I think it's all going to come down to not only if they meet the so-called "minimum" number of necessary wins, but as we've seen in the past, how much weight they committee puts on past results, specifically consistency. In addition, the NSK wants to make sure they don't end up with "career Ozeki." Much of this has already been discussed, I know. Barring injury and assuming they all achieve the so-called "minimum" number of necessary wins, I think Wakamotoharu has the best chance of being promoted. It's hard to believe that he debuted in Makuuchi in Jan 2022. He has noticeably improved in each basho, has come out from under the shadow of his brother, has had only one MK since his Makuuchi debut, has otherwise achieved minimum scores of 9-6 (no 8-7's), several 10-5's and one 11-4. He also exhibits a calm, confident manner and seems mature. I admire his consistency and if he does well in Nagoya, I believe the committee will agree that he deserves to be promoted. Hoshoryu has a lot of potential but has achieved double digits only 4 times in the past 2 and 1/2 years. On a positive note, his last MK was way back in Nov 2020, but he's had a lot of 8-7's since then. He seems more mature, and though exciting to watch, I think the promotion committee will wait for another basho to see if he can maintain consistent results. Daieisho is difficult for me to venture an opinion on. A veteran (debuted in Makuuchi in Sept 2015), with one Yusho, one Jun-Yusho, 2 kinboshi and numerous Special Prizes, plus good results the past 3 basho, he would seem the ideal candidate to be promoted. However, one can't overlook the MK's and the barely KK's. Maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on consistency, but as I mentioned in my first paragraph, I think the committee that makes the promotion decisions want rikishi that can ultimately go beyond being "professional Ozeki." I'm not so sure that Daieisho meets this criteria. I wish them all the best of luck. Nagoya is going to be a treat for all of us. -
It's so unique and very creative --- definitely one of a kind! It looks like it's a pretty good size, too. When I watch the live TV broadcast, I will be scanning the crowd looking for it when Kirishima's bout is announced. Nearby spectators will undoubtedly be admiring it, also.

Hokuseiho's parents certainly knew what they were doing when they fed him yak milk as a baby!

I do but unfortunately I'm not going to be able to go to this festival. Prior commitments + mobility issues. It sounds like it's going to be fun!

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Jakusotsu! @Ganzohnesushi what is the significance of the big sperm in your post? (I have forgotten the majority of German I learned in high school back in the 1960s)!
-
Count me in! I'm just happy that I didn't end up in Juryo! My rikishi and I didn't do so well this time. Am hoping for a better performance at Nagoya.
-
Kirishima (formerly Kiribayama) wanted to be an Ozeki for Kakuryu's danpatsushiki. I'm so happy he got his wish.
-
So amazing how quickly a rikishi's fortunes can change. It seems like it was only yesterday that he was 11-4 as a Maegashira 12. But that was at the Jan 2022 basho and it's been all downhill since then. He first caught my eye in Sept 2014 when I attended the Aki basho. At that time he was in Makushita. He was exceptionally fast and utilized a great variety of kimarite. I just knew he was destined for great things. A more knowledgeable friend than me scoffed and assured me that Ishiura would never amount to anything because he was "too little." I was convinced that he belonged in Makuuchi and I was right. At his first basho in Makuuchi in Nov 2016, he made a big splash, winning 10 bouts in a row and receiving a special prize for Fighting Spirit. When I was invited to Miyagino-beya by a friend, I was introduced to Ishiura. He seemed stunned that I knew his name. He never said a word, just stared at me! He was so little that we just faced each other, eye to eye. Unfortunately, my taxi arrived before I had a chance to attempt to carry on an actual conversation with him. But from then on, I cheered for him every time he mounted the dohyo. His intai was a long time coming. I will never forget him.

Yes, even when talking to reporters!

These are great pictures! I especially enjoyed seeing a completely differently side of Terunofuji. His love for his family is heartwarming.

Happy Birthday, Kinta! Hope you can catch up to me (I'm 74) and go well beyond! Don't cough too much. God might think you're sick and call you home!
