Did Ex-Yokozuna Asashoryu get an invite or is he a persona non grata?
-
I didn't know that Buckethead was ever in Guns 'n' Roses! I was a big fan of the band around 1994 when they toured with Metallica (Use Your Illusion Tour). My husband & I saw them in Houston at the Astrodome and in New Orleans at the Superdome. Of course that was well before Buckethead joined the band.

Oh Fujisan, that's such GREAT news!! I've been thinking about you and wondering how you've been doing. Please give me your current address (private message if you prefer). I want to make another card for you.

The information in this article is not only old, but much of it is just WRONG! 1) Who is this Nominzaya Davaanyam he has supposedly been married to since 2018 and has had 2 children with?? Ex-Hakuho has been married since 2007 to a Japanese woman, Sayoko, and they have 4 children. 2) He did NOT begin sumo training in Mongolia at the age of 15. He participated in Bokh in Mongolia at a young age, yes, but not sumo. 3) He wasn't scouted by Miyagino-beya. He arrived in Japan as a skinny boy weighing about 137 lbs and didn't look promising at all. There are many stories about how it came to be that he joined Miyagino-beya, the funniest of which involved the then Miyagino Oyakata being allegedly drunk at the time he agreed to take him. 4) The article says Hakuho "faced fierce competition from fellow Yokozuna wrestlers Kakuryu and HAKUHO" (??). They probably meant Harumafuji. Asashoryu should have been mentioned, as well. 5) Singapore?? This is the first I've heard of this! 6) I hadn't heard that ex-Hakuho owns gyms in Japan (or elsewhere). Was this article written by a Bot?

Thank you so much, @Akinomaki and @rokudenashi for the excellent information you have provided! It is all so helpful. After doing some checking, I think I will sign up with Tenso and have the 3 books I buy from amazon.co.jp shipped to the Japanese address they give me. They have a "consolidation" service so the 3 books I buy (probably from 3 separate sellers) can all be put in the same package that's shipped to me, saving me in shipping costs. Thanks again, guys! Because of all y'all's help, (including @Yarimotsu), a friend of mine is going to have a very Merry Christmas!

Thank you very much for your offer to help, Rokudenashi. As it turned out, getting the books shipped to me here in the US wasn't the biggest problem. The bigger issue I'm contending with is with amazon.co.jp. It won't show potential buyers any listings from third-party sellers who don't ship to their particular country. I found that out yesterday. That necessitated asking a friend in Japan to look at all the listings instead of the few from sellers who do ship to the US. It doesn't matter if I'm looking at the Japanese version of amazon.co.jp OR the English version of amazon.co.jp. It knows that I'm not in Japan. To give you a perfect example, the listing for the Autobiography showed 2 NEW starting at 5,104 Yen, 7 USED starting at 5.99 Yen and one COLLECTIBLE at 8,807 Yen. But when I tried to view all of the choices, it only allowed me to see the 2 NEW and the one COLLECTIBLE, which of course were the most expensive. When I specifically tried to view the 7 USED, I got a message rejecting my request. I don't recall the wording but it had to do with needing to supply an eligible address for shipping purposes. And all I wanted to do was VIEW the 7 USED listings! I really want a USED-LIKE NEW or a USED-VERY GOOD copy from a seller with a good feedback score, so it is frustrating. A partial language barrier has sprung up between my Japanese friend and me regarding the details of the 7 USED listings, but we're working through it. Thanks again for letting me know about Tenso and those type of package forwarding services.

(See edit on my first post). Thanks for everyone's messages and help!

Kinokuniya answered my email & said both books are out-of-print and they don't have any copies. I confirmed that they are available from third-party sellers on Amazon.co.jp, but I'm not sure if they will ship to the US. Having the book titles in kanji that @Yarimotsu provided really helped a lot. https://www.amazon.co.jp/s?k=負けるも勝ち相撲とは-人生とは-&language=en_US&__mk_ja_JP=カタカナ&currency=USD&ref=nb_sb_noss

I just now clicked on the above link and then changed the language from Japanese to English. If I'm coming to the right conclusion, there aren't any sellers that will ship the original volume to the US (Buying Options came up with nothing). https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4532165687/ref=olp-opf-redir?aod=1&language=en

NOTE --- I posted the kanji alone to make it easier to cut and paste. Here's the Amazon.co.jp screen showing the 3 listings. https://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_ja_JP=カタカナ&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=第62代横綱大乃国の全国スイーツ巡業&crid=2P9KOON5UL95I&sprefix=第62代横綱大乃国の全国スイーツ巡業%2Caps%2C1300

Thank you, @Yarimotsu, for taking the time to look up this information. I really appreciate it. 第62代横綱大乃国の全国スイーツ巡業 I copied and pasted the the above kanji to the Search box on amazon.co.jp and found out that there is the original baking book plus a Volume 2. If you can read Japanese (if not, if anyone else can), could you please put the above kanji in the amazon.co.jp search box, hit Search and let me know --- 1) if I can have these books shipped to the US and if so, what the shipping cost would be (I live in Houston, Texas, USA 77059). 2) what the cost of each book is (The original book and Volume 2). I'm interested in NEW, LIKE NEW or VERY GOOD. Thank you so much @Yarimotsu, for your help, and everyone else who has taken the time to read this. I'm hoping to get these as Christmas gifts for a friend of mine.

*************** ATTENTION EVERYONE, I NOW HAVE ALL THE INFO I NEED TO OBTAIN THE BOOKS. THEY ARE ALL AVAILABLE FROM THIRD-PARTY SELLERS ON AMAZON.CO.JP. MOST OF THE USED BOOKSELLERS WON'T SHIP TO THE US SO A FRIEND IN JAPAN WILL SHIP THEM TO ME THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR MESSAGES AND HELP. ******************* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello all, I hope you can help me. I am searching for 2 books by the 62nd Yokozuna Onokuni. They are available only in Japanese. I am interested in purchasing them. His full shikona was Onokuni Yasushi but I don't know how his name (as the author) would have been shown. 1) (Autobiography, published in 2008). TITLE --- "Winning Even When You Lose." 2) (Baking book, unknown publish date) TITLE --- "62nd Yokozuna Onokuni's National Sweets Tour." Here is the baking book's title in kanji (第62代横綱大乃国の全国スイーツ巡業). --- from Wikipedia. Thank you very much!

If you still come up empty, as a last-ditch effort, you could try to find someone in San Francisco or Los Angeles (the other 2 stops for this tour) who might have friends and/or family in Seattle & who might want to fly up to visit them & also take the opportunity to get in the ring. Someone who couldn't get "get in the ring" tickets in SF or LA. And since it's Thanksgiving weekend, that's even more of a reason to get together with out-of-town friends and family. I fully realize that this tour is really designed for tourists and people who are interested in sumo but know little about it. However, the "get in the ring" with an actual Japanese ex-professional sumo wrestler is something that would appeal to more than just tourists. I feel confident that you will find someone by exploring all possible avenues and with a bit of luck. Other ideas --- You could put an ad in the local newspapers. And if the promoter allows it, your friend could find someone to go to the venue on the day of the event maybe an hour or so before it starts, and try to sell the tickets there. (If the promoter allows them to do this, they would probably have to agree not to discount the tickets. Or scalp them). Good luck!

https://seattlesumo.com/ Seattle Sumo Club. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.facebook.com/raincitysumo/ Rain City Sumo Club, also in Seattle. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.seproductions.us/contact-us SE Productions is the Sumo + Sushi event promoter. You can contact them either by using the form in this link or by sending them an email (email address is listed in the link). There's no phone # to call.

You might consider trying to find out if there's a sumo club in Seattle and let them know. Since all of the "get in the ring" tickets are sold out, I think there might be at least one person who really wanted one and is just sitting there, disappointed, not knowing that there's one available (and of course, one regular ticket). You also could check the universities for sumo clubs. In addition, you might want to contact the promoter of this event and maybe they know of someone who wanted a ticket & couldn't get one.

https://theticket.seattletimes.com/top-picks/sumo-sushi-wamu-theatre/ Here is an article in yesterday's Seattle Times about the Sumo and Sushi event. What's odd is that it doesn't mention anything about the public being able to get in the ring with the rikishi, although maybe the reporter chose not to include this information since those tickets are already sold out. I still think it should have been mentioned.

I can't stop laughing!! Tears are running down my cheeks! It's just beginning to sink in that I'm 3/4 of a century old! lol I LOVE the cover of this book. One of my friends on SF calls me Yokozuna Granny Joann!

The production is sold out according to the La Jolla Playhouse website. But it also says additional tickets may become available at a later date. https://lajollaplayhouse.org/show/sumo/

I second Rokudenashi's suggestion. The buysumotickets.com website specifically says they can arrange concert tickets. Jeff is the owner of buysumotickets.com and I have dealt with him many times (to arrange sumo tickets) since 2014. He is honest, efficient and reliable. https://www.buysumotickets.com/other-events

What is this all about? I don't find "Senshiken" in the Sumo Glossary. Am quite curious!
