Thank you for this video. Next, can you please film the Makuuchi Yobidashi and Gyoji? There is a Makuuchi Yobidashi named Shigeo who is the best singer of them all. His voice is incredibly beautiful. I would be in hog heaven if you made a video of just him singing. Part of the reason I stay up til 2 AM (my time) to watch the live broadcast of the basho is just to hear him and he only sings twice. It can sometimes be frustrating because his singing is often drowned out by the announcers going over slow-motion replays. Shigeo usually sings about 5:10 PM Japan Time. I don't have a sample of him singing, unfortunately. I rely on Youtube to hear repeats and the videos of the basho are usually taken down soon after the basho end. Thanks again for your interest in the Yobidashi and Gyoji.

Oooooooo, is that a DAGGER I see poking out of his sash?? Or merely a cell phone or a comb?!
-
The only "Z" I could find close to an active rikishi is a Zabuton, especially when it hits him upside the head!!
-
Soukokurai is an Oyakata nowadays, not an active rikishi. He is Arashio Oyakata, who has reason to be very proud right now.
-
The only active Chinese rikishi is Daiseizan Daisuke, who debuted in Nov 2021. However, he is actually from Inner Mongolia and his birth name does not start with L, P, Q, V, X or Z.
-
The SF Forum database is down right now so I can't go in and play. Regarding rikishi names, do only shikona count as opposed to the rikishi's real name? Have there ever been any Chinese sumo wrestlers? I have heard that Chinese names beginning with "Q" are not uncommon, so that would be a possibility.

Sandanme 100 tsukedashi ? Not anymore..

At least the not-so-occasional tangents are the products of intelligent minds, the kind that are attracted to this Forum. I haven't detected any dum-dums on this Forum, though there may be some like me who are less learned. Speaking of tangents, I guess I've just gone off on another one. -
That's pretty amazing. Considering that he got married in May 2018, had a daughter in Jan 2019, and then ................ fast forward to July 2021 when the article was written, suddenly he has 4 children!
-
Wakatakakage is married with a 3-year-old daughter. Maybe by the time she grows up, women will be allowed in professional sumo, and SHE can be Wakatakakage II. Edit to add: Wakatakakage having only one child was the latest information I had. However, since he mentioned "kids" in The Asahi Shimbun article, apparently he has more. According to an article I read, he married in 2018 and had a daughter in Jan 2019. He obviously has at least one more.

In the following video, I am curious as to what the 2 reporters are saying to Wakatakakage and what he is saying in response to their questions and comments (all in Japanese). At one point, Mitakeumi's name is mentioned and Wakatakakage hesitates in answering. There is a lot of laughter throughout the interview. Amazing to see this side of Wakatakakage's personality. The actual interview starts after the playoff bout is shown (at 1:30).

Here is a great example of the machine gun-like bursts of the Japanese announcers pronouncing Wakatakakage. This was during the playoff bout between Wakatakakage and Takayasu. Of course, they were pretty excited which is certainly to be expected. Start watching (and listening) at 26:35.

I notice from watching the Japanese-language live broadcast on TV Japan that the Japanese announcers sound like machine guns when they pronounce Wakatakakage's name. When I try to imitate them, it's pathetic. I always end up adding an extra syllable or two. Normally, I watch the Japanese live broadcast but the few times I have watched a Youtube video that featured the English-language announcers, they generally just sound out Wakatakakage's name, syllable by syllable. His name really is quite easy to pronounce if you break it down that way. WA-ka-TA-ka-KA-ge.

Well, I learned something new! Not necessarily about the reasonableness of scheduling but what Gish gallop means!!! (Had to look it up).

Regarding whether Takakeisho was angry or not when he banged his fist into the wall, he was definitely angry. See 16:10 on Kinta's video for day 11. http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/41618-videos-haru-basho-2022-days-1-11/?page=2 The announcer said it was the harite that did it. (Scroll down to the video for Day 11).

What a fantastic day of sumo!!! But wow! Is no one going to mention the MATTA MADNESS?? I don't recall ever seeing so many in one day.
-
Our database still has him at 131kg. That's quite a big difference.
-
I've always thought that if he (Hoshoryu) could put on some weight, he would be a force to be reckoned with. He's technically skillful and very quick. I think he has the potential to be great. The database shows him to be 186cm (6 ft, 1 inch), but weighing only 131kg (289lbs). As I recall, the average weight of Makuuchi rikishi is 340-350lbs. In the photo above, he looks a lot heavier to me than 289lbs. And yes, I have to agree that that will be to his advantage as a shin-sanyaku.
-
Is it my imagination or has Hoshoryu put on a LOT of weight?

Happy Birthday. Akinomaki!! There are many people who contribute to the greatness of this forum, and one of the greatest is you! Happy 60th and wishing you many more!

Was this performance part of a larger TV show? Or was it just the 2 of them alone? Can you describe what their surroundings looked like? I've always enjoyed tracking down Youtube videos of rikishi singing. However, this doesn't ring a bell. I'm used to hearing him sing alone. If you could please describe everything you remember about them singing together, that might jog someone's memory. If it was part of the NHK Charity TV show that is broadcast once a year, those videos tend to be deleted shortly after the broadcast. On all of those shows, there are always duets between rikishi and female stars, The female stars are dressed in evening gowns or beautiful kimono and are often older than the rikishi. Does this sound familiar?

I wish I could find a video of Shigeo, a Makuuchi yobidashi who sings just after the midway point of the bouts (about 5:10 PM Japan Time). He sings like a male angel and brings tears to my eyes with the beauty of his voice. He draws out the notes and lets them linger in the air. So beautiful! He's part of the reason I stay up to watch the live broadcast (2:00-4:00 AM). I dream of one day hearing him sing something besides the rikishi ditty.

Do you know what they mean by selling tapestry? Are they selling life-size versions of kesho-mawashi? Or maybe miniature versions? Does it indicate how much they cost? My friend will be at the basho on shonichi and always offers to buy me whatever I would like (I pay him back). I would be interested in knowing more about these tapestries.

Video of Young Girls Training For Sumo

I guess I waited too long. Still same message ("no longer available"). I suppose it could be possible that it's my old out-of-date browser on my very old laptop that's caused the viewing problem. -
