This is shocking .... and really sad! I had no idea that Ichinojo had a drinking problem. I would be surprised if he is allowed to compete at Kyushu. Do you think he will be kicked out of ozumo altogether if found guilty?

How to buy a Basho Ticket outside of Japan?
sumojoann replied to Kumafuji's topic in Sumo Information
https://www.buysumotickets.com/faq#pre-orders I definitely recommend pre-ordering, the earlier the better, even nowadays. Some seats are hard to get or sell out quickly. If you're pretty flexible and you just want tickets for weekdays, you should be okay. But if you're picky like me or you are concerned about ending up empty-handed for whatever reason, then pre-ordering is a good idea. Keep in mind that Jeff doesn't have access to any tickets prior to when they go on sale to the general public. The day they go on sale is when he jumps in & tries to fill his pre-orders on a first come-first serve basis. You'll notice that on Jeff's site, there are certain types of seats that he doesn't even try to get for his customers on weekends or holidays because they're too difficult to even try for. The link above answers FAQ. -
How to buy a Basho Ticket outside of Japan?
sumojoann replied to Kumafuji's topic in Sumo Information
https://www.buysumotickets.com/ I highly recommend buysumotickets.com. Jeff is the owner and his company has been in business since 2008 and is based out of Japan. I have used his services on several occasions, once buying 11 tickets (Aki 2014), and also buying just one ticket every year for Nagoya (up until the pandemic hit). He is excellent. I can't say enough great things about his company. Honest, reliable, accurate, with great customer service. They are currently accepting "pre-orders" for the January basho. His site explains how that works. He charges the face value of each ticket plus a service charge for each ticket. Depending on when you order and your preference, he can ship the tickets to your home by EMS (Express Mail) or have them ready at your hotel in Japan. I know you'll have a wonderful time at the basho. Wish I could be there, too! I hope you will take lots of pictures and I encourage you to post them on the Forum for all of us to enjoy. Have a great trip! -
https://www.amazon.com/Sumo-David-Lord-K2-Sharabani/dp/1781454639 This looks very interesting! David Sharabani in the Times article has a new book, which includes over 95 photographs, coming out in March 2023 called "SUMO". It's available for pre-order from Amazon. The description says the author spent a year knocking on a lot of doors and filling out a lot of paperwork in order to get access, so I guess he felt like he got a rare glimpse. There is a photo of Okinoumi riding a skateboard down the street. That picture alone is almost justification for buying the book. (I couldn't read the rest of the article in the Times so I don't know if the new book was mentioned).

New sumo documentary - the darker side of the sport
sumojoann replied to Jejima's topic in Ozumo Discussions
The US Gov NIH, National Library of Medicine, National Center for Biotechnology Information, cited a Japanese article from 1995 with the title "Risk factors for mortality and for mortality rate of sumo wrestlers". Though old, the article seems well-researched so it's difficult to know how accurate it would be today. The article itself is in Japanese (not shown) but here is an abstract ------ Abstract We compared the mortality rate of sumo wrestlers with that of the contemporaneous Japanese male population, and inferred the usefulness of an index for predicting longevity in sumo wrestlers. The standardized mortality ratios (SMR) for sumo wrestlers were very high in each period, and also high for ages from 35 to 74. Cox's proportional hazards model analysis revealed that the variables in "nyuumaku" entry year and BMI were statistically significant (p < 0.05) factors in mortality. In the survival curves, the lower BMI group had good life expectancy compared with the higher BMI group. In conclusion, the higher rate of mortality in sumo wrestlers seems to be due to the markedly higher rate of mortality from 35 to 74 years old. In sumo wrestlers, also, this study provides evidence that the higher overweight groups have substantially higher risks for mortality. -
At first, when I saw the title of this thread, "Sumo Halloween Costumes Get Cancelled", I thought it was about rikishi being told that they couldn't wear Halloween costumes this year! What is the Yamamoto Halloween train?

Fortunately, that's not the case. The "Far Side" has an Official Website where a daily cartoon from the archives is published, and you can shop for various items. (I didn't check to see if you can replace your fading cup!). https://www.thefarside.com/ There's even a new calendar coming out for 2023! It looks like the 2023 calendar is full of his old cartoons. Click on "New Stuff." Larson has fallen in love with digital art drawing and is now drawing again, only this time digitally. FYI -- There are 341 listings on Ebay for "far side cup", 15 of which are for (condition) "New" ones. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=far+side+cup&_sacat=0&rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=3 This link shows all 341 listings, New and Used. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=far+side+cup&_sacat=0

It would have been nice if he could have been in the new one in some capacity. However, he seems quite understanding about it.
-
I thought I'd seen all of Gary Larson's cartoons but somehow this one got overlooked. Love his offbeat sense of humor!

Welcome to the Forum, Waka to the third! Are you a fan of the 3 Waka brothers? It's great to have you and we look forward to your comments.

I loved it when he jumped off the stage briefly and ran around waving at everyone. He has quite an outgoing personality. Wakatakakage seems a little more reserved.

This one's for you, Eternallyround!! Wakamotoharu as you've never seen him before, singing at the recent NSK (Japan Sumo Association) "Sumo Fan Appreciation Festival." What he lacks in singing talent, he more than makes up for it with enthusiasm. His performance runs from 12:30 to 16:35 in the video. (You may have to move your cursor back if it jumps ahead).

Don't know the answers to your first 2 questions. No program for Haru 2011 (basho canceled due to match-fixing investigation). No program for Natsu 2011 (basho held but was not treated as a full-fledged honbasho. No prize money or trophies awarded). There is a program for Haru 2020 (no spectators due to Covid). Tokushoryu, who won the Hatsu basho 2020 is on the cover of the Haru 2020 program. No program for Natsu 2020 (basho canceled due to Covid). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honbasho @Akinomakiand/or some other knowledgeable members of the Forum might know the answers to your first 2 questions. I recommend you change the title of this thread to "Need information about sumo programs." P.S. You have a very nice collection! My collection goes back to Jan 2004, but is not complete. I only started collecting in 2013. I am missing a few, mainly Kyushu, which I understand are sometimes hard to get.

Hola, Eternallyround! Como estas?? You have come to the right place to learn about sumo. So many friendly and helpful people here. We welcome you. Feel free to ask any questions or participate in the discussions. Glad to have you on the Forum.

What are your specific questions? I have a sumo friend in Japan who gets the programs for me (through regular sources). Although I don't think he would have time to write a letter, he might be able to direct you to the right entity to contact.

Hi @AthenayamaThank you so much for your kind birthday wishes! It's 2:30 AM here and if there were a basho going on right now, Makuuchi would have started 30 minutes ago. The only game I've played is the "21" game (sorry, I can't remember the full name, something like "21 Aki 2022). You are presented with a list of 21 pairs of rikishi who MIGHT fight each other in the upcoming basho. You have to guess (BEFORE the real basho starts), 1) which of each pair would win -- and 2) most difficult, which pair will NOT be matched up (not due to kyujo). There are various rules, some creative, in case of ties. I didn't use a "Secret Shikona", just my quite boring sumojoann Shikona. (I guess THAT'S too late to change after all these years, isn't it?). I surprised myself by getting a Jun Yusho for one of the "21" games! Thanks again for the Happy Birthday wishes! It makes me feel happy to be a member of this forum with so many friendly and helpful people (and only a couple of irascible types!).

This picture of Hiradoumi's kesho-mawashi is not as clear as the one in my link above, but is not bad.

Here is a picture of Hiradoumi in one of his kesho-mawashi. (Scroll down). https://sumowrestling.fandom.com/wiki/Hiradoumi_Yuki Is this what you were looking for?

Very interesting, and to also be quick about it, I would be interested in your opinion of the article to which I provided the link (see my previous post). NOT the entire article, just the section concerning language, but only if you have time and the desire to read it. And if this is too off-topic, maybe we could start a new thread in the Off-Topic category.

To get into a detailed discussion of the tremendous differences in the Mongolian language that is spoken in Inner Mongolia vs the Mongolian language that is spoken in (Outer) Mongolia would put us waaayyyyyy Off-Topic. There are profound differences and the subject cannot be looked at as if the discussion were about British English and American English, for example. Here is just one article out of many that very clearly delved into the subject. https://www.selenatravel.com/blog/the-differences-between-inner-mongolia-and-outer-mongolia With that being said, let's return this thread to the subject of Hiro Morita's "Sumo Prime Time." A further discussion of the Mongolian language can always be started with a new thread in the Off-Topic category. Thanks.

Definitely speaking Mongolian, although even to my not-quite-so-educated ears, I detected quite a difference between Sokokurai's Inner Mongolian version of the language vs what's spoken in (Outer) Mongolia. I even wonder if he could be understood by the other Mongolian rikishi (and Oyakata), all or most of whom I believe are from (Outer) Mongolia. I was surprised that Hiro didn't mention that 2 brothers or 2 members of the same heya CAN fight each other in a honbasho if there is a playoff. He said in a grand tournament, members of the same stable don't fight against one another. True but not a complete answer. Yes, it was great to see a danpatsu-shiki so close-up. This is the closest I've ever seen. Hiro really has connections!

Wishing you happiness and fun on your special day, and a big box to put it into.
