How was Terunofuji "gifted" the yusho?
-
Looked like Harumafuji's left ankle buckled in today's loss. But he was already backpedaling and in a poor position.
-
Exactly. These two seem to have a personal beef with each other.
-
Unfortunate that Kisenosato got hurt, but I loved seeing Harumafuji display his fierce competitive spirit and Yokozuna pride. First Yokozuna matchup with Kisenosato and Harumafuji completely dominated him. Isegahama beya standing up!

I never tire of watching that bout! The look on Goeido's face after the match is priceless.
-
It's amazing what predictions get made after a single day of the Basho.

Sorry to inform this. Tokitenku has passed away. RIP

Sad news indeed. Rest in Peace, Tokitenku. -
I am. But I'm only just seeing this message now. Probably wouldn't have been much use anyway as my camera battery died so I used my phone to shoot pics and videos today.

Watching the Basho live on television in Tokyo is pretty amazing! They even have the broadcast in English.
-
The sound of the tachi ai impact between Gagamaru and Chiyotairyu was impressive! Crack!!
-
I'm hoping that Harumafuji pulls it together and remains in the competition. I leave for Tokyo on Friday and will be bummed if I don't get to see him perform his dohyo iri. It's a thing of beauty.

I guess I was just lucky the last couple of times. I wanted tickets for the first 4 days (Hatsu 2015) and ended up getting great seats for Days 3 and 4. Waited in line on Day 2 and was able to get one. This time, I forgot to get them when they first went onsale, but 3 days later I was able to grab 7 seats for Day 9. Unfortunately, the seats aren't all together. As I'll only be in Japan for a week this trip, I only really have time for one day of sumo. But definitely plan to come back in May if we can arrange a group visit!
-
Not really. Often it's a matter of being sure to buy tickets as soon as they go onsale.
-
I was able to get tickets for Day 9. Will probably be standing in line early in the morning for Day 8!

Hakuho comes back from sitting out an entire basho because of injury and surgeries, scores an 11-4 record and people are ready to write him off already? Trippy. I'll be in Tokyo for the January basho and wouldn't be at all surprised to see him win it.

Sato vs. Ura bout? Much ado about nothing, imo.

Potential Forum Meeting May 2017, updated to May 2019..

This really resonates with me. Why? The only sports I follow are Boxing and Sumo. For years I posted on the old HBO Boxing Forum and some of us started organizing "fight gatherings". Because of that I've met lots of people over the years and some of us have actually become close friends. We've been doing fight gatherings in NYC, Vegas and Atlantic City for well over a decade now! I would absolutely LOVE to meet some other Sumo fans and take in some keiko, basho action or dinner. That would be a real treat! -

The most I've ever done is 3 consecutive days of the basho. In January I'll likely only do one or two days as I'll be in Tokyo with a group of friends and we're only there for 8 days. But if there is a Forum gathering in May, I'll go see sumo for as many days as possible. -
Great shots!!

Count me in!! I'm heading back over for the January 2017 basho, but I'd go back in May if there was a Sumo Forum gathering! -
Amazing job!!! Laughed until I had tears in my eyes!!

LOL!!!!! I actually bought one of those masks last year at the Kokugikan. But even if I wore it for Halloween, nobody in the States would know who Hakuho is!
