You gotta check out Antonio Inoki's restaurant in Shinjuku. Wall to wall photos and posters of him, display cases of his belts and memorabilia, multiple televisions playing his famous bout against Muhammad Ali, life-sized statue and a single theme song that plays on a continuous loop. Talk about ambience...

There are ALWAYS rikishi in that McDonalds near the Kokugikan. I make a poin to go there specifically to spot the mostly lower ranked rikishi.
-
I've watched Hakuho for far too long to count him out. If this really is his last hurrah, then I expect he'll do his damndest to go out like a BOSS
-
I always liked him. He had a "look" about him that made me envision him as someone that was destined to be in the world of Sumo. Glad I had the opportunity to see him atop the Kokugikan dohyo. Wishing him a bright future!

It was sometimes painful to watch him gasping for air after his bouts. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors!

Chiyotaikai even mouthed off a little bit

Asanoyama's COVID violation suspension and comeback

That was my first thought as well. But Boody also lied to the POLICE and not just his oyataka. Do you think that will make any difference? -
Asanoyama's COVID violation suspension and comeback
CT3* replied to Seiyashi's topic in Ozumo Discussions
Stunningly stupid actions by Asanoyama. -
Not wholly unexpected, but still a bit sad. I kinda thought he would retire after he failed to regain his Ozeki rank, but he battled on. Then I thought he might retire when he got demoted to Juryo, but he battled on. Seeing him struggle in Juryo was a bit disheartening to watch. When I came back to watching Sumo, he was already an Ozeki along with Baruto, Harumafuji, Kotooshu and then Kisenosato. This definitely feels like an end to a certain era. I'll always remember his bumpety-bump Sumo and wish him the best!
-
Happy to see him achieve promotion to Ozeki. Very interested to see what role he will play in the emergence of Sumo's new hierarchy!
-
That last shove was "in the flow", but really sent Hokutofuji flying. If it had been Hakuho who had done that, there'd be cats on here rage-posting about it.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

Takayasu's comment cracked me up! "He has returned from way down and far away..." Hilarious! -
Poor Takayasu just can't catch a break...
-
Kotoshogiku's yusho was a gift, imo. Seemed fairly obvious at the time.
-
Shouhouzan always keeps it gangsta. Gotta love it!
-
After 10 days of competition, only 5 guys in the Makuuchi division have secured kachi-koshi. Wow...
-
Sadly, I don't think we'll ever see Terunofuji back at his pre-injury form.
-
Imagine stepping away from Sumo for a year and then coming back and looking at the current Leaderboard after 4 days. It would likely be a pretty surreal experience!
-
Always blows my mind when folks start talking about a potential yusho winner within the first few days of a basho...

Welcome aboard!

Nothing is stopping a rikishi from employing the tactic against Hakuho. Would they dare? That is the only question. I vaguely recall Osunaarashi trying it against Hakuho, but I may be wrong.
-
I've long had the sense that Hakuho doesn't particularly care for Endo. Not uncommon for him to rough Endo up in their bouts. After that matta, I had a feeling that Endo was going to get punished.
-
Ha! I literally had the same thought when I saw that guy.
