Hi there,

Anybody remember this bout? Think it was in the Nagoya basho '96, when Kyokudozan somersaulted over Asanowaka and pushed him out from behind. Does anybody know if this clip is on any of the dvds, or is available in any form? I was in Japan when I saw it, but would love to see it again.

Anybody else got any memorable bouts they would like to see?

Not sure about this one, but the documentary on Kirishima vs Konishiki has footage of some awesome matches. Like the ones with Mainoumi (90 kg) vs Konishiki (280 kg) at 34:00, where the bigger guy just kinda stood there at tachi-ai and wouldn't dare to move (Applauding...) . Also, fast forward to 31:20 for the most awesome henka ever.

Maaate!

thanks for the link, am downloading now. I will not fast forward through anything!

The Konishiki-Mainoumi matchups were a feature of basho when I was in Japan the first time round (95 to 98), I saw many of them live on TV. It was fun until Konishiki as good as ended Mainoumi's career by sitting on him. Aye, t'were ne'er the same after that.

Brilliant stuff: now if I can just find the kyokudozan bout...

Wow, that's the bout alright. Thanks for posting that - awesome picture!

No trace of it on video?

What's Kyokudozan doing now? I thought he was entering politics or something?

Oh, I found out that this somersault trick was done in the aki 94' tournament, and apparently was not credited with the win because he didn't touch his hands down at the tachiai.

I did manage to find a Kyokudozan clip on youtube:

Not the somersault, but impressive for other reasons.

Any chance of some keen member getting a collection of favorite sumo clips together on youtube?

Ouch and ouch! At least they both look more rueful than in pain afterwards. Indeed, kyoku seems positively jovial.
