Guest goshuuyama Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Hi everybody! I'm a married mother-of-two (both boys) ;-) , living in Perth, Western Australia. I teach Japanese to primary (elementary) school students aged 4-9. I first fell in love with sumo in 1988, when I spent a year in Japan as a teenager on Rotary Exchange. I watched each basho religiously on NHK with my host families. When I first arrived in Japan, I couldn't speak Japanese at all, and sumo was one of the few programmes I could work out what was going on (well, sort of!) My favourite rikishi were Asahifuji (an ozeki at the time - I thought he had a cute, baby face! :-) ) and Chiyonofuji (already a yokozuna ;-) ). I was lucky enough to attend one day of the Fukuoka basho towards the end of my year in Japan. Since then, it's been difficult to follow sumo from Australia - very occasionally there's a story in the newspaper, or I check results on-line, but it's not the same as watching live! Which brings me to how I came to find sumoforum.net. I discovered that the NSK site now has live streaming, but I can't seem to get it to work! I've tried for three days in a row now, but I keep getting a message that says, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is not available (for example, the server is busy or not online)" I've tried downloading the latest version of WMP, and I've also downloaded an alternative media player, but nothing works!! Am I too slow? (Do you need to start watching at the start of the broadcast?) Does the server become overloaded and not allow more people to access the video? I have a reasonably fast broadband connection, so what's happening?? (Showing respect...) Any help or advice would be most appreciated! Regards, Goshuuyama (Janine)
Fay Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Hi goshuuyama, first of all, welcome to the forum. ;-) I'm not an expert but with this message from your media player it looks to me that the broadcasting hasn't yet started, it starts normally with the last fights of juryo. So if you have a look on this site Sumo bouts you can see the results of the Juryo bouts and you can check when the server is working. Make some trials during the last bouts and I think you should have no problems. If you are too late than maybe you never get in for the day :'-( .
Kintamayama Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 I've tried downloading the latest version of WMP, and I've also downloaded an alternative media player, but nothing works!! Am I too slow? (Do you need to start watching at the start of the broadcast?) Does the server become overloaded and not allow more people to access the video? Yes, it gets overloaded quite quickly. Try entering around 15:30 JST, during the last three Juryo bouts.

Use the NSK Sumo Stream link at the top of the sumo forum display to have a better chance of getting the live download. It activates about 15 minutes before the NSK site link does. If you use the NSK link, the available slots get filled within a few minutes. Using the forum link, you get in ahead of the rush.
Fujisan Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Welcome to the forum Janine (Blushing...) Chuck in your salt ;-) and join the fray.

Johnofuji Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 Gidday Goshuuyama, Welcome from the other side of the island. Please get your students into sumo as we need to keep Ozsumo alive.Everytime we get together an Australian junior team they discover girls and lose interest. If you can get them hooked before the pheromones kick in we might be able to send a team to Japan one day. I can send you some tapes of all recent basho for your students if you like.Maybe you could even give them a little sumo homework and get them to design a Tshirt for our sumo team.I'm sure I could find some sumo parathernalia as a prize for the best entry. Gotsuandesu Johnofuji
