the dohyo/banzuke.com videos which have been the only real source of watching the video's for me for years so this sucks! As those other links are far from complete (only a handfull of bouts just doesn't quite cut it.....)

By the way, it appears that you live in the U.S. You do realize that you can watch sumo via

Dish Network and perhaps cable TV, right? By subscribing, even though it's a bit expensive,

you are helping to support the sport you apparently care a lot about. I used to have a disclaimer

on my pages saying the movies were only posted for those who can't watch sumo by any other

means. I think Alexander still has that on his pages. As Verena has pointed out, none of our

online movies are exactly legal. I refused to accept any money for a long time, but relented

recently. I really appreciate those who have contributed (since it does cost me money in

computer hardware and stuff to keep the movies going) but I reconsidered and will no longer

ask for donations. That crosses a line, I think. So would many lawyers :) But many people

have no alternative, other than the not-so-great live feed. But it's nice that even exists. How

many other professional sports provide a free live feed, regardless of the quality?

As I said, I'll try to post the rest of this basho beginning tomorrow. But if I also do movies

next basho, I need to let you know in advance that I'll miss the last couple of days. I'll

be buying tickets and sitting in the Kokugikan for at least days 14 and 15. Maybe I'll see

you there, supporting sumo with your wallet :)

I really doubt there'd be any legal problems hosting captures of the live feed NSK themselves are broadcasting to the web. Everybody has the right to capture TV feed for their own use, and although they are not entitled to distribute the captured feed further, I doubt NSK would ever bother taking any legal action, because the loss of revenue from someone watching NSK's own web feed of a past sporting event is exactly nil. Heck, depending on the laws of your country, clips of bouts could and probably would classify as "news", which would not even fall under regular copyright.

I feel so bad for all of you that cannot get the Live Japan TV broadcasts!! :'-( I read how frustrated some of you are without Dale's videos at Banzuke.com (Weeping...)

I was complaining to myself that I couldn't stay up and watch it live and had to record and watch it the next day... (Blushing...) (no complaints anymore from me!) I am so lucky and fortunate that I can record the whole 2 hours of broadcast on my DVD recorder and watch it when I get up!! ;-)

Speaking only for me, I like watching the DVD recording better than live. You can play stuff back as many times as you need to pick up small details that the announcers talked about that you didn't catch yourself. Even better...you catch stuff they missed. And best of all...you can cast the most well-schooled votes on Henka Sightings imaginable! But seriously, as Dale said (sort of), if you love sumo and Dish Network is available: "Life is short - get the Dish!" (Blushing...)

Yes, thank you so much indeed Dale, it's a constant source of enjoyment being able to look at bashos gone by ;-)

Hi, I recorded the short version of the bouts that NHK broadcasts here in Brazil in a quality slightly better than info-sumo videos. Cause I'm new to this video recording thing, I think the files could be shrinken even more, and there is no audio, but it's worth seeing.

Makuuchi day 6 - First part:

MegaUploadlink: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JAEOOQP8

Direct link(I think it works): http://www25.megaupload.com/files/17805b32..._D06_xvid_1.avi

Makuuchi day 6 - Second part:

MegaUploadlink: http://www.megaupload.com/pt/?d=AXFZBZRL

Direct link: http://www32.megaupload.com/files/ed922f2c..._D06_xvid_2.avi

I already recorded day 7, but it takes long to upload 300MB @ 16kbps. Any hints on how tho make the videos smaller is apreciated. If I'm breaking copyrights feel free to erase the post.

Movies would be great, but Megaupload is TERRIBLE. (Neener, neener...) It basically requires the viewers to install their spyware "toolbar" to download whatever has been uploaded, as the public download spots are severely limited.

Thanks! Finally some good quality movies.

Great to see the movies on banzuke.com again. Thanks (You are going off-topic...)

It's difficult to have any sympathy for NHK in the whole sumo videos situation. As a public broadcaster, they receive gov't funds and also collect (mandatory) subscription fees from citzens, then turn around and give away the rights to their programs to a semi-private subsidiary, which sells NHK productions on video and DVD (making a tidy profit for "retired" NHK execs working there - the old golden handshake).

None of these profits are actually funneled back into new programming for the people who ponied up the dough.

It actually isn't mandatory in the sense that NHK has no legal backing to enforce fee collection. It is a habit of foreigner and Japanese alike to get the NHK-contracted folks trying to collect fees to piss off. They are persistent buggers, aren't directly employed by NHK, and don't always play nice. NHK is a corrupt bureaucratic money-trap. I feel no shame in not contributing to them, after the slew of stories of corruption and abuse of funds that have come out of their offices.

Personally I think that NHK would be mighty pissed if it got the low-down on these videos being hosted. They were behind a recent push to take children's programming off of youtube that had been put up there, and that quality isn't so great either. Not to say that you shouldn't keep up the work, mind you, just that they probably wouldn't overlook it despite the common-sense reasons for doing so.

There doesn't seem to be a single video of today's (well, Day 10) bouts anywhere... Anybody know of any other places to get them ? Tried the French Infosumo, Dale's pages, Doitsuyama's site, and the webtorrent files, but nothing at all...

As I understand it, one is legally obliged to pay. The rule has not needed to be enforced, until recently. There are now some test cases of fee-dodgers in Tokyo going to the courts...

I'd like to say thanks to all the video people out there. Without you, I'd watch sumo on Eurosport with a 1-2 month delay. I know it's quite an effort and it's much appreciated, especially since I can only rarely watch the stream.

Be ready to be warned or banned by EXIL who hates P2P networks (Clapping wildly...)

Let's not distort the issue here; you were warned for linking to a rip of a commercially available DVD. Certainly P2P links to webstream or NHK Sumo broadcast caps have been posted here without incident before. I agree with Yuriyama Ren though, capping full days probably teeters on the line of acceptability.

I do have a question, though. Does the above first sentence mean that basho DVD are commercially available and are being sold by the Kyokai? I mean the current ones, not the "greatest hits" type that they and Numbers have released in the past. Or did I miss something somewhere along the way?

Thanks, (Dribbling...)

In this context, a question about about Ken Coller's recordings. I'm assuming those are technically illegal as well?

The previous instance I was referring to was not about a basho DVD, but a commercial movie.

The video for the 10th day will not be available because Info-sumo administrator couldn't record the video this day (strike at the french airport !)

If someone can send the video for the 10th day to Info-sumo, it would be great (Punk rocker...)

I have added the day 10 movies from the stream now, as well as some for day 11 and day 12. Thanks again to Asashosakari for covering for days 5 to 9!
