pros:

- since argueing with the referee will automatically give you a yellow-card there is nearly no argueing over decisions....i really hate that whining all the time....did a referee EVER take back his decision?...i do not think so....a big plus for fifa to instruct referees to sanction those habit AND for the players quickly realizing what to do (or not do)

- obviously the fans really enjoy the games and their stay at the wc 2006....it is great seeing fans from different countries posing for photos and generally just enjoying being there

con:

- i hated the way greece won the euro-championships with an all-defensiv-system....and now it is the same again...one, or even both teams are defending with at least 6 men....i understand why they do it, but i hate it as spectator...big minusses for the defensive way most games are played....

my views are different from the german commentators on tv.....they talk about a top-wc....maybe the best ever.....i absolutely disagree....even the so called experts are lauding the players, teams, coaches...

what do others from this forum think about wc 2006 so far?

I don't think that the quality of football shown is that bad. As for Gernobono's observation about defense: I don't know if the number of goals scored is particularly low. However, I second Gernobono. Teams have become exceedingly good in keeping a narrow lead.

In the first 23 matches only four had an equalizer, i.e. only in about one sixth of the games a team gave away a lead. This ratio strikes me as extremely low, and it makes watching the WC a little boring.

However, the last two days saw two more equalizers, one from the USA (or should I say Italy) against Italy, and one from the Koreans against France. So maybe the suspense factor will reach normal pretty soon.

One thing that urks me is the uneven distribution of team strength in the different groups... you can argue which group may be "weak" and "strong", but there should be a better system in place... somehow... Group H is just awful, with groups C, E, F on the other side of the scale (Taking a photo...)

PRO: no whistling of fans during the national anthem of the oponents is played.....i guess this is part of the "hugging" between fans from "enemy"-teams (taken from jakusotsus matchreport)

Why does he make barthez (The Lama!) play?!

Because Pedro Lama has already retired :-) ?

Sorry for purely national approach - but it

One of the biggest cons (at least the one that bugs me the most): NO GERMAN BEER AT THE VENUE! Oh, the pain... :'-(

i guess they do not sell alcoholic beer in the stadium like in uefa-contests......and why not sell "Bud" then?

no alcohol...no taste.....just liquid......

But you only have to wait a couple of hours before you can drink some again! It's not like being stuck in NZ with the beer being generally rubbish or the good stuff being expensive.

One thing thats been getting on my nerves(Apart from the WC interfering with my Tv) is this fixation people have with Wayne Rooney and whether hes fit to play and its not just the English either.

It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't come a cropper just like he did at Euro 2004 and all because they rushed him in before he was match fit.

Now I'm going to hibernate for a couple of weeks.

as it stands players ronaldinho or ronaldo could miss the final if brazil make the semi final and the referee is as picky over tiny things as some have been so far.

All yellow cards issued in the first round are erased as the knock-out phase starts, so the Brazilians will start the next phase (where they will be kicked out by Ghana) with a clean slate.

If you meant that they have a good chance of picking one up before the finals, well then you are right of course..

As for the question at hand, the yellow cards for "soft" delinquencies were quite far and in between in my opinion. I think it's high time the refs took care of butchers, which they have been doing quite successfully this time around.

As defensive players, Cafu and Emerson are likely candidates to step down from the starting XI against Japan. The risk of a yellow card, which would carry a suspension preventing them from playing in the second round, may prove too much for the coach.

i guess, moti is correct.....yellow cards were extinquished after the round robin...but ONLY if the player had just one.....getting a second YC in the last round robin-match would give suspension in the first round of elimination-stage.....so.-...cafu and emerson had one YC ...if they had been shown another one they would have been suspended for the match against australia (?).....but now their YC are cancelled and they begin at zero YC.....

additionally all suspended in the first round of eliminiation have their account also reduced to zero for the second round (round of 8)....so another YC would NOT give an automatic suspension as any third YC would normally give.....

That makes a sence Gernobono - thanks a lot for explanation (Hugging...) .

Not sure what is happening with yellow cards, but the fact a Croatian could get 3 yellows in one game before being sent off after the game had finished did seem a little strange.

PRO: The game itself! I love this kind of football, and this is from an American. It is wonderful to watch Portugal, brazil, Germany and Argentina play. The fans, the mix of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and whatever world in one big colorful aswirl in the stands.

CONS: Japanese football, period. The stupid haircuts, the diving, the lack of kintamas at the goal. And Kaswabuchi is still the prez of the federation, despite four years of Zico. And having to go back to the baffoonery of what is called J-League.

I rest my case guys.

England vs Portugal Wayne Rooney gets sent off and we lose on penaltys probably blinded by the sun shining out of Rooneys a**e and now everyones saying he shouldn't have played.

Jeez these guys are quick.

I think the Rooney sending off was a tricky one.

Phil Scolari - the Portuguese manager is known for his gamemanship (and I understand he is not shy of admitting it.). Maybe he told Cristiano Ronaldo to get in and needle Rooney (who is known to have some temper.) if he had the chance. There was absolutely no need for him to have got involved with the incident, but he chose to do so.

Those two players know each other very well - they train and play with each other week in and week out. That push was against someone he knew well - wrong, but different to pushing a stranger.

Bear in mind that Figo in the previous match headbutted a player, and only got a yellow card.....

Maybe, being English is clouding my opinion ;-)

Edit: A caller to the BBC's Radio Five Live reported that C. Ronaldo winked at the Portuguese bench after 'the incident' as though to say 'Job done.' Of course, the caller being English may be clouding their judgement too.....

One more thing, it is reported (again over the radio) that Alan Shearer - former England captain - commented on BBC TV that the first thing that Rooney would do when Ronaldo reports for training would be to 'clock him one.'

As Ronaldo has already said he wants to play for Real Madrid (and Alex Ferguson - the Manchester United managwer values loyalty), I have a feeling that he may not be playing for Man U in the new season....
