After last basho, we inaugurated the Razzberry Sansho as the antithesis of the traditional honors the Kyokai bestows on rikishi for their outstanding performances during the basho. These are the awardees for the just-concluded Natsu Basho.

(Note: The awards listed below are not officially-sanctioned by any legitimate body and are presented for the fun and enjoyment of Sumo Forum members. Any insult, slander or other possible offense to your favorite rikishi is quite possibly intentional but definitely not malicious.)

Least Outstanding Performances: Asashoryu and Tochiazuma. The most outstanding Performance Award (Shukun-sho) is normally presented to the rikish that brings excitement to a basho by unexpectedly defeating one of the favorites

Least Outstanding Performances: Asashoryu and Tochiazuma.

Shouldn't the award go to someone who actually participated in the basho?

Most Spiritless Effort: Kotomitsuki. In his most egregious performance, the proverbial last straw that secured this award, Mickey, on Day 10 against the eventual champion, raised a white flag as soon as Hakuho got into a favorable yotsu position and, with nary any pressure from his aite, stepped cooperatively backwards out of the dohyo.

Yes, Yes, Yes! It was pathetic, and nobody seemed bothered about it at the time, except for me.

Day after day, bout after bout, he charged straight into bigger and stronger opponents in a way that was reminiscent of the Polish cavalry as it confronted the German Panzer division at the outbreak of World War II. Courageous to the max but distressingly futile.

This one is quite funny or maybe a little miserable but I think you should try this Cavalry Charges and Propaganda :-P Try to scroll page down and look for propaganda topic. (Nodding yes...)

BIPOLAR AWARD: Hokutoriki. I think I may even mean this literally. He has stretches where he is almost maniacally aggressive, glaring and glowering and charging forward for wins. Then he goes long stetches in a depressed state, giving up weakly at the tachi-ai and suffering defeats with a deeply troubled look on his face. Sometimes each of these states lasts for an entire basho. This time, he went from depressive to manic in the same basho. He really shows the signs of bipolar disorder. At least, for this award, as a metaphor for his sumo.

I think I would give them out as follows:

Least Outstanding Performance: Wakanosato and Kotomitsuki

Maybe Waka is getting old, but he looked TOTALLY outclassed at M2. He just didn't have the stuff he used to, and it really didn't seem to bother him. And Kotomitsuki was about as average as you get.

Most Spiritless Effort: Kotooshu

Injury or not, he just looked like he wanted to get every day over with, and had that "Kotooshu Face"(much like the "Derek Lowe Face" for any Bill Simmons fans out there) after every loss, the grimacing "Ugh, what just happened? Oh well" look that for me, displays his utter lack of drive this basho.

Most Technically Inept: Ama or Wakanosato

Ama for the reasons you stated, and Wakanosato for the reasons I stated above. The reason I don't go with Ama 100% is that he was indeed out of his league. But the difference between his performance last basho and this one is night and day.

i like Gusoyama's list minus Kotomitsuki, you all are giving him alot of crap but he did still get 8 wins, its not like he went 2-13. its not outstanding but he hardly did poor. this isnt completely unusual for mitsuki, every 3rd or 4th basho he has one where he barely scrapes 8 together. but its not like we expected mitsuki to do great things(like kotooshu, who should be contending for the yusho). i really expected alot from Waka this time as he isnt up to sanyaku yet and he sorely disappointed us all.

Razzberry Booby Yusho: Picture of a reclining Miyabi.

(Whatever above, it is funny...) Oh wow that is terrible.

I meant, of course, that Miyabi deserved the "booby prize" for losing the yusho kettei-sen. ;-) (Whistling...)

I am sure that is what you ment... (Nodding yes...)
