exciting basho so far

I have to admit I missed the first half of this basho, just because I did not check the forum for a week.

(I was stupid...)

But though I regret the fact that Asa and Tochi are injured, this basho is the most exciting in a long time IMO.

Last year was mostly just more of the same 'Asa obliterates competition, Yusho on day 13'.

This time, the competation is wide open with the 2 strongest competitors kyujo.

And the rikishi are suddenly aware that this is their chance to shine. Miyabiama, Chiotaikai, hakuho are making this exciting to the last day I think.

And Baruto is making one hell of an entry into Makuuchi.

And what about the indomitable 'shuzan... he is actually having two fine bashos in a row for once! He could even be back in the top ranks before he retires!

I am very much enjoying the basho, because I really enjoy watching Miyabiama and Chiotaikai. Also not having to see Asa just destroy everyone else is nice. I wish Tochi wasn't injured, would like to watch him (also wish that Asa wasn't injured, always hate to see that happen). The only thing I could ask for is that Dejima was doing better...and that Toki was there :'-( (In a state of confusion...)

I'm heartily enjoying this basho, but I think I'm rooting for the rikishi that are getting a little less press this time out,(in my opinion) but are still doing great.

Hakuho's sumo, and his somewhat quiet 10-1 record, are great, I hope he can make a tsuna run next basho, it would be great to see two strong Yokozuna again. Asasekiryu's putting together a MIGHTY fine basho, at 8-3, and I'm still pushing for the other shin-Makuuchi, Homasho, to get a KK and a solid first basho in the big league.

And I admit, Miyabiyama is growing on me, though I'm still not sure he'd make a good Ozeki right now. All in all, an enjoyable basho that I'm really unsure about the outcome.

I'm disappointed that Tochiazuma had such a dismal showing, but I'm really pleased that two old-timers that I have a soft spot for (Chiyotaikai and Kaio) and doing so well. Obviously some life left in them yet, and they are now guranteed to be Ozeki until September!!
